- A teenage passenger died when two cars collided after a short police pursuit.
- Three other people were taken to hospital, and the death has triggered a mandatory referral to the police watchdog.
- What happened before impact, and will the watchdog open its own investigation?
- The boy who died was a front-seat passenger in the Nissan. He died at the scene. Specialist officers traced his family, told them what had happened and offered them support.
- The cars collided on the A37 Wells Road, at the junction with Airport Road and Wootton Park in south Bristol. It happened just after four in the morning on Sunday, October twenty-fifth.
- A white Nissan Juke collided with a black Audi S3. Police say an unmarked police vehicle had pursued the Nissan briefly beforehand. Members of the public were driving both cars involved in the collision.
- Ambulance crews took two other passengers from the Nissan to hospital. Both were teenage children. The third person taken from the scene was the man driving the Audi. Their injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening when police issued their statement.
- Officers later arrested a 17-year-old boy at a residential property on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He went to hospital for assessment, was discharged and remained in police custody when the Sunday statement was issued.
- Police haven't identified the arrested boy as the Nissan's driver. His hospital assessment was described separately from the three people ambulance crews took from the collision scene.
- Wells Road reopened just after four that afternoon. Investigators had closed it to examine the collision and recover the vehicles. Police confirmed the boy's death and the arrest in their statement later that Sunday.
- The death prompted police to inform their Professional Standards Unit and make a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The referral gives the watchdog the circumstances to assess before deciding whether to investigate.
- A detective inspector from the Major Crime Investigation Team was overseeing the police investigation while the watchdog considered its decision. Enquiries were at an early stage.
- Police haven't explained why the pursuit began or whether it had ended before the cars collided. Responsibility for the crash remains under investigation.
- The watchdog is assessing the circumstances and hasn't announced whether it will open its own investigation. Police are seeking witness accounts, dashcam recordings and other footage to piece together what happened.
