Errick D. Simmons 3

  1. An explosion at a chemical plant sent a large black smoke plume over Greenville.
  2. Nearby residents were told to shelter indoors and shut out potentially hazardous smoke. Firefighters and hazardous-materials teams responded to protect neighbors and people working at the plant.
  3. The urgent question is whether the shelter order has changed and what air testing shows about possible exposure.
  4. The explosion struck Loveland Products in Greenville, Mississippi, a city of about 26,000 people. The shelter instructions target areas near the facility. Loveland belongs to Nutrien, and the plant was formerly known as Platte Chemical.
  5. The Washington County Emergency Operations Center issued the order just before nine-thirty Wednesday morning, November fourth. City officials placed the explosion just after seven. The fire department received notification at about seven-ten, then began its emergency response.
  6. Officials described the affected area using Highway 182 from Beauchamp to Kuehn Road, and VFW from Beauchamp to Kuehn Road. Residents within or near that zone were told to take precautions against smoke entering their homes.
  7. The facility is at 917 Platte Road. A state wastewater permit identifies it under the Platte Chemical and Loveland Products names. That location helps identify the operation while emergency instructions focus on the surrounding area.
  8. Keep windows and exterior doors tightly closed. Turn off heating, cooling and ventilation systems that draw outdoor air inside. Officials also told nearby residents to avoid outdoor activities until further notice and stay alert for emergency instructions.
  9. People were told to avoid the plant’s immediate vicinity and give emergency crews room to work. Don’t approach the facility, interfere with the response, or enter visible smoke or chemical vapors. Follow any evacuation or shelter instructions issued by emergency officials.
  10. Anyone who thinks they were exposed should seek medical attention. Officials say call 911 immediately for burning or watering eyes, persistent coughing or throat irritation, dizziness or severe headaches, nausea or vomiting, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.
  11. Those are precautionary health instructions. Officials haven't confirmed a chemical exposure among nearby residents. The protective order responds to the potential danger from smoke while crews fight the fire and environmental teams assess conditions.
  12. County deputy emergency management director Sara Moreland Hester said the fire was controlled by midmorning, but wasn't fully extinguished. Emergency officials reported zero injuries as of ten-twenty-eight that morning. The fire assessment didn't provide an all-clear for surrounding residents.
  13. Plant management's preliminary explanation linked the fire to an herbicide chemical inside a hot box. Officials haven't named the chemical or said how much escaped. Investigators still have to determine what caused the explosion and what the smoke carried beyond the facility.
  14. Greenville firefighters requested help from Riverside and Leland. They also requested specialized firefighting foam from the Greenville Mid-Delta Airport Fire Department. Pafford Emergency Medical Services was placed on standby, and additional fire and safety departments were dispatched from surrounding counties.
  15. The county emergency operations center coordinated with a regional hazardous-materials team. The Environmental Protection Agency and Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality sent personnel to the scene. Environmental monitoring and containment assistance formed part of the response as crews worked around the plant.
  16. Mayor Errick D. Simmons said protecting residents, first responders and everyone working at or near the facility was the city's first priority. He asked people to remain calm, avoid the immediate area and give emergency personnel space.
  17. We don't yet know whether officials have lifted or changed the shelter order. Officials said they'll release information about potential exposure, air quality and any additional precautions once confirmed. They haven't released confirmed air measurements showing whether nearby residents can safely resume outdoor activities.
