  1. Trees fell onto homes and utility poles came down in Heber-Overgaard. Families lost electricity, and the sheriff's office reported significant damage and minor injuries. A tornado is suspected. How soon can households get power and help while officials assess what caused the destruction?
  2. About 3,000 people live in the community, roughly 140 miles northeast of Phoenix in Navajo County. Its 2020 census count was 2,898. The storm struck Wednesday night, October 21, as severe weather crossed Arizona into Thursday.
  3. Fallen and snapped trees struck residential property, and uprooted trees and crumpled structures marked the damage. State Representative Walt Blackman said at least one injury had been reported. The sheriff's office described the injuries as minor, but the final number of people hurt still isn't clear.
  4. A tornado warning was in effect when the storm crossed Heber-Overgaard. Weather service meteorologists gave a preliminary assessment that it likely produced a tornado. An official damage survey hasn't confirmed that assessment. The damage to homes and poles is already clear.
  5. Church members were finishing a prayer meeting when the storm arrived. At Overgaard Baptist Church, they moved together into the women's restroom to shelter. The church said members were OK, though their nerves were rattled. Outside, the storm had damaged the grounds and windows.
  6. The church described losing many trees, along with signs, fences and a few windows. Its statement said, “We had a great prayer meeting in the women's restroom.” The members' safety there came alongside reports of injuries elsewhere in the community.
  7. Families also lost power as utility poles fell. Utility crews were working, but the disruption reached homes already dealing with storm damage. Blackman, whose district includes parts of Navajo County, asked Governor Katie Hobbs to declare a state of emergency for the county.
  8. Blackman's request puts emergency help before the governor. He described families without electricity and significant damage to their property. Whether that request produces a declaration and assistance for affected households is still unsettled.
  9. Golf-ball-size hail battered northern and central Arizona Wednesday night, damaging roofs, shattering windows and denting cars. Strong winds also knocked down trees in Flagstaff and Mesa, with some landing on walls and carports. The destruction extended into the forest northwest of Flagstaff.
  10. A few dozen ponderosa pines more than 30 feet tall fell in Coconino National Forest. Those measurements describe the forest damage. In Heber-Overgaard, trees struck homes, but officials haven't given a complete count of damaged buildings.
  11. Warm, moist air moving north helped fuel storms arriving from the California coast. Changing winds allowed storms to rotate, creating conditions favorable for tornadoes. That combination helps explain why forecasters were watching for more than hail and damaging straight-line winds during this outbreak.
  12. Weather service meteorologist Ryan Bernhart called the seasonal setup very unusual for the area. He also emphasized the strength of the fallen forest trees, saying, “These are not small trees that are down.” Some stood more than 30 feet tall.
  13. Storms capable of hail and wind damage continued across central Arizona early Thursday, with flooding and tornadoes also possible. Northern Arizona's earlier severe thunderstorm watch was scheduled to end at 10 that morning, a time that's already passed. Thursday's forecast shifted the severe-weather threat toward eastern Arizona.
  14. Rainfall rates exceeding one to two inches an hour could cause flooding in south-central and eastern Arizona. Forecasters also expected possible damaging gusts, large hail and a small chance of an isolated tornado through early to mid-afternoon. Those were projected hazards.
  15. A broader slight-risk outlook covered parts of central and eastern Arizona into western New Mexico for October 22 into October 23. Large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes were possible. In Heber-Overgaard, crews were working, but families still had no restoration timetable or confirmed decision on emergency help.
