- Three officers pulled a driver from a burning Jeep with his foot on fire.
- The 37-year-old man is expected to recover. One officer suffered minor burns during the rescue. Police plan to pursue four offenses, but will a court issue a criminal complaint?
- The Jeep struck a utility pole on Pine Street in Holbrook, Massachusetts, early Sunday, October 25. Police put the time at about 3:20 in the morning. The collision snapped the pole in half.
- Low-hanging wires stretched across the front of the Jeep, and the vehicle caught fire. Inside, the damaged dashboard pinned the driver's right foot. He couldn't get out, and his foot and sneaker were burning.
- Sergeant Martin Faherty and Officers Jonathan O'Brien and Matthew Richards reached the trapped man. They faced a driver whose foot was caught beneath the dashboard while the Jeep burned around him.
- The driver told the officers, “I can't. You're going to rip my foot off. It's stuck. It's getting hot.” The officers pulled his foot free, then carried him to safety nearby.
- Police say the three officers freed him within one minute of arriving. That interval begins when the officers reached the scene. It doesn't tell us how long the driver had been trapped before they got there.
- Officer Jonathan O'Brien suffered minor burns to his fingers during the rescue. Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire, and the driver received treatment at the scene before being taken to the hospital.
- The driver, a Holbrook resident, was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. He's expected to recover. His later condition hasn't been announced, so that expectation is the latest medical information about him.
- Police Chief David Del Papa said the officers did “an incredible job under dangerous conditions.” He said the outcome would've been much different without their immediate action, and judged that their quick response likely saved the driver's life.
- Police say they intend to seek a summons for four offenses. The allegations include second-offense operating under the influence of liquor. They also include negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and speeding.
- The court hasn't yet issued a criminal complaint, so the proposed offenses are still awaiting that step. Police have withheld the driver's name because the complaint hasn't been issued.
