Russell Brand

- Ireland’s public-sector strike has closed virtually every primary and secondary school.
- Hospitals have cancelled all non-urgent procedures, and families are having to arrange childcare. Unions have announced another strike day for next week. Whether a new opening for pay talks can prevent that second shutdown is still unresolved.
- More than 300,000 workers are reportedly taking action, including nurses, doctors, teachers and civil servants. The stoppage began on Wednesday, October 14, and was scheduled for 24 hours. That participation figure is still a reported estimate.
- Workers formed a picket at Nenagh Hospital in County Tipperary. Across the country, the walkout went ahead despite the Government’s final appeal the previous afternoon to postpone it and enter negotiations.
- The dispute is about replacing a public-sector pay agreement that expired at the end of June. Unions want pay terms settled before other issues are addressed. The disagreement reaches into the order of negotiations, even as both sides express willingness to talk.
- Minister James Lawless said on October 11 that the strike could still be avoided and urged negotiations. But Fórsa leader Kevin Callinan confirmed on October 13 that members would proceed because their concerns remained.
- Fórsa and SIPTU are among the unions mobilising. Before the strike, more than 100,000 members were preparing to participate in Fórsa’s action, within the wider national mobilisation. The walkout has been described as the largest public-sector strike in 20 years.
- Virtually every primary and post-primary school is closed. All non-urgent procedures have been cancelled. Emergency hospital cover has continued under exemptions agreed by unions, and GP surgeries are open. Those protections keep essential care available while scheduled treatment is interrupted.
- Colleges and universities had also been expected to close widely. School closures mean parents may need time away from paid work, and smaller businesses can feel those absences particularly sharply. Business group IBEC says it is giving employers practical guidance.
- HSE Chief Clinical Officer Dr Colm Henry confirmed the cancellation of all non-urgent procedures. The health service’s plans covered hospital and community care, including outpatient appointments, day services, routine procedures and primary-care clinics.
- The HSE began cancelling elective care on October 9. Its emergency arrangements named emergency departments and ambulance services. Earlier plans also protected cancer services, dialysis and local injury units, alongside some critical community care. Home support was being prioritised for people with the greatest needs.
- Junior hospital doctors were to work Sunday-equivalent rotas under the staffing arrangements. The protection for urgent care sits alongside broad cancellations elsewhere, so patients using routine hospital or community services face disruption even while emergency hospital cover continues.
- Early forecasts ranged from as many as 20,000 people affected to tens of thousands of non-urgent hospital appointments. A broader estimate put medical appointments potentially cancelled at up to 150,000. These are forecasts using different measures, and they can't be added together.
- Nobody has given a final numerical cancellation total. The reported figure of one million on public hospital waiting lists also leaves a basic ambiguity: whether it counts distinct people or entries across different lists.
- Virtually all court sittings were expected to stop, with a small number of exceptions. Dáil and Seanad sittings and committee hearings were also expected to stop. Driving tests were to be cancelled, and Dublin City Council announced no bin collections or street cleaning.
- Phoenix Park was expected to stay open while its facilities closed. Disruption was also anticipated at Office of Public Works heritage sites and cultural institutions, including the National Library of Ireland and National Concert Hall.
- Those were the announced arrangements across these services. They don't amount to a complete account of which facilities actually operated during the strike.
- The Communications Workers’ Union and National Bus and Rail Union told members not to cross picket lines. The bus union warned that some Dublin drivers could encounter pickets near hospitals or colleges. That creates a risk of wider disruption to buses and postal work.
- The bus union represents drivers at Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann. Its instruction doesn't tell passengers which routes were affected, and no specific bus or postal disruption has been confirmed.
- The Government says it is fully committed to pay talks with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ Public Services Committee and other representative associations. The negotiating opening now depends on whether both sides can agree how to put pay first.
- Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers said pay could be discussed “as a priority”. Callinan now sees a possible “pathway to talks” if the Government puts pay at the centre. He has also called for intervention from the Taoiseach.
- Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomed union leaders’ “tone and disposition” and said “the foundations are there” for an agreement. Both sides are signalling an opening, but they haven't agreed a replacement pay deal. The next announced strike day is October 21.
- That second day could still be avoided through negotiations. Whether it proceeds depends on the parties agreeing on pay and the framework for talks before then.
