  6. Police confirmed that a fire had occurred inside the condominium. A homeowner suggested it might have begun in the kitchen and spread into the living space. Investigators haven't confirmed that proposed starting point or how the fire spread.
  7. Sara had been in Jacksonville for a family member's funeral. She said Reggie stopped replying to her on Wednesday, November fourth. By Thursday night, she felt something was wrong and returned home. She couldn't get in the usual way because Reggie had the key.
  8. Sara said she removed a screen, opened a front window and moved the blinds. Strong fumes hit her, and she saw Rocky on the floor. She called to him, but he didn't move. She stepped away and called 911.
  9. Sara also questioned how the deaths could have happened after neighbors had complained about fire and smoke. She said people had left their units. Fire Rescue described an earlier visit to the complex involving a smoking light fixture on a balcony.
  10. Fire crews went to the complex Wednesday night, November fourth, after a neighbor reported the smoking fixture. They resolved that problem. Reggie and Rocky were found dead Thursday night, November fifth, inside the condominium.
  11. Neighbors described hearing a smoke alarm and smelling smoke two days before the discovery. Fire Rescue said its crews saw no other signs of fire on the property during Wednesday's visit, and heard no smoke detectors sounding.
  12. Those descriptions may concern different complaints or different times. Nobody has explained whether the neighbors' earlier alarm account involved the same incident that brought crews out Wednesday. The difference alone doesn't show that firefighters missed a fire inside Reggie's unit.
  13. Rocky stayed close to Reggie throughout everyday life, Sara said. He would even wait outside the restroom door for him. She said Rocky was found under the recliner, a place she connected with his habit of remaining near Reggie.
  14. Sara described them as inseparable. “Wherever Reggie would move, Rocky was always there,” she said. She called Reggie the love of her life and said she'd never be able to replace him.
  15. Investigators are seeking information about what happened inside the condominium. They haven't determined what started the fire, what caused either death, or when they occurred. Any connection between the earlier smoke complaints, the balcony fixture and the fire inside the unit is still unknown.
