- A fire destroyed a vacant building and cut power to occupied homes next door.
- Four residents of an adjacent duplex had to find somewhere else to stay after losing electricity. Firefighters stopped the flames from reaching nearby buildings, and no injuries were reported.
- When can the residents return, and when will the destroyed building come down?
- The building stood on Linden Avenue, north of 23rd Street, in central Long Beach. The fire was reported in the 2300 block around midnight, as Wednesday gave way to Thursday, October twenty-ninth.
- Smoke and flames poured from the building's upper windows. Crews faced a structure they feared could collapse as they worked to protect the homes around it.
- Firefighters stayed outside because of the collapse risk. They requested a second alarm, bringing additional engines, and protected surrounding houses while the abandoned building burned itself out. The flames destroyed that building.
- Nearby power lines were damaged, and the adjacent duplex lost electricity. So the damage reached its residents even though firefighters kept the flames from spreading into their building. The electricity interruption also extended beyond that duplex.
- Southern California Edison counted 23 affected customer accounts and estimated service would return by 10 a.m. Thursday. That time has passed, but restoration hasn't been confirmed. It's still unclear whether the four residents can return home.
- Edison's figure counts utility accounts, while the displacement figure counts people. Four residents needed other accommodations because their duplex lost power.
- The fire department says the abandoned building had burned at least once before in the previous two years. That makes this at least the second fire there during that period.
- A neighbor who gave his name as Carlos described a third fire, though that higher total hasn't been confirmed. He was showering when another neighbor asked him to call 911, and worried about his parents and other neighbors.
- Carlos wanted the homeowner to act to prevent another fire. Fire officials haven't said what started this one.
- City crews were called to coordinate demolition after the fire destroyed the structure. The city plans to take the building down, but officials haven't announced when that work will begin.
