Officers have an animal to assess after Jennifer Balcarras and Selah Reed’s deaths, but no announced forensic result links it to the suspected attack. The trail warning remains in place.
Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed, set out for what their family expected to be a short afternoon walk near Bella Coola, British Columbia. They knew the trail, roughly a five-minute drive from home. Balcarras, 48, was an art therapist and mother of four; Reed worked as an education assistant and studied online through Athabasca University. Relatives described a shared love of art and hiking. Neither woman returned.23
Now conservation officers have captured a grizzly bear in the investigation into their deaths. That gives investigators an animal to assess against evidence from the scene—not an established answer about what happened. No DNA match or exclusion has been announced, and officers have not identified this bear as responsible.2
The B.C. Conservation Officer Service announced the capture on November 6. Its latest instruction to the public is unchanged: continue avoiding the West Snooka Trail area, also called Snooka West Trail. Bear sightings have been reported nearby, officers remain in Bella Coola and trapping continues. A bear in custody is not an all-clear for the trail.125
In our November 4 report, we said both women had been found dead after a suspected animal attack and that no bears had been captured at the time of the official update then available. The capture replaces that trapping status. It does not settle the cause and circumstances of the deaths, identify a responsible animal or establish how many bears may have been involved.
What the assessment must establish
The service says it will use forensic DNA matching, distinctive physical measurements and other characteristics specific to the animal to assess whether the captured grizzly was involved. Those are investigative methods, not findings. The November 6 statement announced no completed match, exclusion or deadline for results.125
Wildlife biologists and the provincial wildlife veterinarian from British Columbia’s Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship will help care for the bear while assessments are completed. Whether it is killed or released depends on what that work establishes.125
Testing will help determine whether captured bears were involved in the attack. Any bear confirmed to be responsible will be dispatched to protect public safety; unrelated bears will be released.
“Dispatched” here means killed. The distinction matters: capture alone does not satisfy the service’s stated condition for killing an animal. ABC News in Australia reported on November 5 that captured bears would be killed under provincial guidelines. The latest explicit statement, also reported by Global British Columbia on November 7, supersedes that broader description: responsible bears will be killed; unrelated bears will be released.92
Officers also hold forensic and other evidence from a separate Bella Coola attack in 2025 and will compare it with evidence from captured bears undergoing assessment. That earlier incident involved schoolchildren and teachers and injured 11 people. The comparison is a line of inquiry, not evidence that the same animal was involved in both incidents.1252
The capture therefore advances the investigation in a specific, limited way. Officers can examine this animal rather than search only for one. But one captured grizzly does not mean one bear was involved, and the continued trapping effort reflects an investigation that is still open.2
The recoveries, and the remaining gaps
The family reported Balcarras and Reed missing on November 1. Search teams found Balcarras’s remains on Monday, November 2, and Reed’s on Tuesday afternoon, November 3. Police, search-and-rescue personnel and conservation officers took part in the response. Officials said the bodies were found about 150 metres apart over the two days.13145
Reed is not still missing. A CBC News video published November 4 carried an earlier-stage account of a continuing search for her; CBS News’s November 4 report recorded the discovery of her remains on Tuesday. The recovery supersedes the continuing-search account, even where older remarks appeared in subsequently published coverage. What has not been established is a separate formal operational stand-down or further detail about the recovery work.161
Inspector Jeff Tyre of the conservation service initially said evidence gathered at the scene indicated a possible animal attack. That preliminary assessment remains distinct from a completed finding about this particular grizzly. The deaths are established; the precise circumstances and any animal’s responsibility still require investigative findings.6
Precautions extend beyond the trail
The response has disrupted ordinary journeys through the community. On November 5, Global British Columbia reported that additional RCMP officers had been deployed to help escort students to school. The Nuxalk Nation announced increased night patrols and voluntary rides home for young people out at night. Residents were also asked to remove food and other bear attractants from outside.4
The evening guidance needs a careful distinction. ABC News’s November 5 account described an imposed curfew. Global British Columbia’s later report that day was more specific: the community recommended being indoors by 8 p.m., and the recommendation would not be enforced. It should not be understood as a mandatory police curfew.124
Transportation, mental-health assistance and cultural supports were also reported, alongside officers’ plans to add capture devices and expand them as needed. Those measures were described before the capture announcement. Their continuation or termination on November 7 has not been independently established; the trail-avoidance warning, by contrast, was expressly renewed in the latest official update.7125
For the families and community, the capture offers the possibility of a more definite answer, not that answer itself. The next consequential finding is whether the bear is implicated or excluded. Until then, its fate remains conditional, the number of animals involved remains unknown and the warning to stay away from the trail remains in place.125

- Conservation officers have captured a grizzly for testing after a mother and daughter's deaths.
- The trail warning near Bella Coola remains in place, and trapping continues.
- On November 4, we reported that both women had been found dead after a suspected animal attack. No bears had been captured at that update. Investigators now have to determine whether this captured grizzly was involved.
- Bear sightings have been reported near the area of the suspected attack in British Columbia. Conservation officers are asking people to keep avoiding the West Snooka Trail area, also called Snooka West Trail. A team remains in the community.
- The capture gives officers an animal they can examine against evidence from the scene. They still don't know how many bears may have been involved. Evidence initially suggested possible animal involvement, and the circumstances of the two deaths remain under investigation.
- Jennifer Balcarras, also known as Jenny, was forty-eight and a mother of four. Her daughter was Selah Reed. Relatives identified the women after they failed to return from what was expected to be a short afternoon walk.
- Balcarras worked as an art therapist. Reed worked as an education assistant and studied online through Athabasca University. Family members said they shared a love of art and hiking and knew the trail. It was roughly a five-minute drive from home.
- Reed has been identified as both nineteen and twenty years old. That difference hasn't been resolved. The family reported the pair missing on November 1.
- Search teams found Balcarras's remains on Monday, November 2, and Reed's on Tuesday afternoon, November 3. Officials said they were about 150 metres apart. Police, search-and-rescue personnel and conservation officers took part in the response.
- Reed's discovery ended the uncertainty over whether she was still missing. The investigation then focused on the deaths and the search for any animals involved. An unsuccessful overnight trapping effort was still being described on November 5. The count has since changed to one captured grizzly.
- The Conservation Officer Service announced the capture on November 6. No DNA match or exclusion has been announced. Officers plan to use forensic DNA matching, distinctive physical measurements and other characteristics specific to the animal to assess its involvement.
- Wildlife biologists and the provincial wildlife veterinarian will help care for the bear while it's assessed. They work with British Columbia's Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship. The animal's fate depends on what that assessment finds.
- The latest policy makes the decision conditional. A bear confirmed responsible will be killed to protect public safety. An unrelated bear will be released. Officers will care for the captured animal while they determine which outcome applies.
- Officers also have forensic and other evidence from a separate Bella Coola attack in 2025. They'll compare that evidence with captured bears undergoing assessment. That earlier attack involved schoolchildren and teachers and injured eleven people. Any connection between the two incidents still has to be determined.
- The wider response has reached school journeys and travel after dark. On November 5, additional RCMP officers were deployed to help escort students. The Nuxalk Nation also announced increased night patrols and voluntary rides home for young people out at night.
- The community recommended being indoors by eight p.m., and the recommendation wasn't to be enforced. Residents were also asked to remove food and other bear attractants from outside. Transportation, mental-health assistance and cultural supports were announced.
- Officers were adding capture devices that they could expand as needed. Those community measures date from before the capture update. The latest instruction for the trail is explicit: keep avoiding the area while trapping continues.
- Investigators have one grizzly to assess, but they haven't identified it as responsible. They haven't announced a date for the forensic results. Those findings will guide whether the bear is killed or released.
