- A three-alarm fire forced two parents and two children from their home. All four are safe, and the Red Cross is helping. Investigators are still working to determine exactly how the fire started.
- Firefighters arrived to heavy flames at the Randolph Street home in Abington, Massachusetts, early Friday. They quickly called a third alarm. The fire was concentrated mainly in an attached barn.
- Crews faced collapse hazards and difficult footing. Abington firefighters were already handling other medical calls when the fire broke out, so mutual aid was requested. Firefighters from other departments were called to help with the response.
- Fire Chief Jack Glynn says lightning struck a nearby tree, then traveled through the ground to the home. He described a trench about two feet wide along that path. Investigators are still examining the cause.
- Glynn says the strike also affected electrical systems at two other nearby homes. That extends the impact beyond the family's property. He hasn't specified how much electrical damage those neighboring homes sustained.
- The emergency response closed Randolph Street, also known as Route 139, between Lincoln Street and Chestnut Street. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes. Whether that stretch has reopened isn't yet confirmed.
- The call time is disputed, with estimates of five twenty-five, just after five and six-thirty. The street identification also conflicts between Randolph Street and Route eighteen. Those differences remain unresolved without the original dispatch record.
- No injuries were reported, and all four family members were inside when the fire broke out. The two parents and two children now need emergency assistance because they've lost access to their home. The American Red Cross is helping them. There's no timetable yet for their return or for the repairs the building will need.
