- A deputy carried two Pringles cans of heroin past a jail checkpoint.
- Former sheriff's deputy Michael Meiser received 67 months in federal prison. He admitted taking $15,000 to bring heroin into the jail where he worked. How far did he get before investigators stopped him?
- Meiser admitted trying to bring approximately 1.1 pounds of heroin into North County Correctional Facility in Castaic. The drugs were concealed inside two Pringles potato-chip cans. Meiser, now a former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, is 40 and lived in Lancaster.
- He arranged the attempted delivery with inmates in 2024, while he worked at the facility. The scheme used the access he already had as a jail employee.
- Two women met Meiser at a Valencia gas station. One was associated with a jail inmate. Meiser received the heroin-filled cans and $15,000 in cash there. He admitted the money was payment from inmates for the attempted delivery.
- Meiser packed the cans and his loaded handgun in a backpack. He rode to the jail campus in another deputy's truck, sitting in the passenger seat. The driver passed the initial security checkpoint and parked in the jail parking lot.
- There's no indication the other deputy knew about the scheme. Later that day, Meiser met an inmate involved in it and spoke with him for several minutes. Investigators intercepted Meiser as he was leaving the campus.
- Sheriff's investigators stopped the truck as the deputies began driving out at day's end. They arrested Meiser and searched the truck. The backpack held $15,000, his loaded handgun, his badge and his department identification. Investigators also recovered both heroin-filled cans.
- The FBI investigated the case with help from the sheriff's department's Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau.
- Meiser pleaded guilty on July tenth, 2025, to one count of possession with intent to distribute heroin. U.S. District Judge Fernando M. Olguin sentenced him on November fifth, 2026. The punishment is five years and seven months in federal prison.
- Meiser got the heroin onto the jail campus, beyond its first security checkpoint. Investigators recovered the cans when they stopped the truck. A delivery to prisoners hasn't been confirmed.
