  1. Israeli settlers attacked olive harvesters and set trees ablaze near Abu Falah.
  2. Palestinians were injured, and American photojournalist Heidi Levine was beaten and taken to hospital. The violence struck people gathering their crop and the trees that sustain that work.
  3. What did soldiers in the area do to protect them?
  4. Levine was attacked near Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank. Her assault is dated October sixteenth, twenty twenty-six. Palestinians and activists were harvesting olives in fields below a hill near an outpost.
  5. Witnesses described masked, black-clad settlers charging downhill, throwing stones and using slingshots. About a dozen olive trees were reportedly set alight. Gunshots were audible during the violence, but the sound alone doesn't identify a shooter.
  6. One description puts about a dozen attackers in the downhill charge. Other witnesses estimated about 80 participants, and another account described at least 80 gathering to stop the harvest. It's unclear whether those numbers describe different stages of the attack.
  7. Levine says settlers pushed her to the ground and kicked her repeatedly. She estimated about 50 kicks. Witnesses described a beating lasting more than ten minutes. She said Palestinian colleagues intervened.
  8. Levine spoke about the beating from a hospital in Ramallah. She said her helmet and jacket helped protect her. Her precise injuries and recovery prospects are still unclear.
  9. Her editor, Matt Murray, said Levine had visible markings identifying her as a journalist. He called the organization outraged and urged Israeli authorities to investigate. Her identification doesn't tell us what motivated each attacker.
  10. Levine also said her camera and bag were stolen. Other descriptions list her passport, phone, wallet and equipment. Those accounts may describe the same losses. A Palestinian farmer was badly injured and heading to hospital, and American citizen Majdi Fheed was also identified among the injured.
  11. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported at least six injured in Abu Falah. Council member Yaser AlKam described 12 injured Palestinians, including four Palestinian-American dual citizens. The accounts may cover different people or nearby attacks, and they can't be added together.
  12. An early injury minimum was two people, including Levine. That lower bound doesn't settle the eventual toll. There's no patient-by-patient breakdown connecting these counts, and adding Levine to the twelve would manufacture a total.
  13. Witnesses say Israeli soldiers failed to stop the violence. Military vehicles were present, and forces reportedly fired tear gas toward Palestinians after some picked up rocks. Accounts differ over whether that intervention protected people or simply ended the confrontation.
  14. Israeli soldiers reportedly shot and wounded a Palestinian man after the settler attack. His condition and the circumstances of the shot are unclear. The gunfire heard during the violence doesn't resolve who fired that particular shot.
  15. The military says its troops didn't see Levine's assault and that it's investigating. Soldiers' presence in the area doesn't show what each one saw. But the military's statement leaves the witnesses' allegation of a failure to intervene unresolved.
  16. Palestinian activist Issa Amro alleges military coordination with, or support for, settler attacks. That allegation hasn't been demonstrated in this assault. The army says such acts involve a few individuals and that its forces are there to maintain security.
  17. The Binyamin settler council challenged the assault account and invoked a planned provocation. Its incomplete statement offers no full alternative sequence explaining Levine's beating and hospital treatment.
  18. Yesh Din, an Israeli rights group, counted at least 170 settler attacks since September twenty-seventh. That tally covers the wider West Bank through the October sixteenth reporting window. It shows the pressure surrounding the harvest beyond Abu Falah.
  19. Palestinian authorities reported at least four deaths and more than 100 injuries over the preceding month. Separately, the United Nations' harvest-related tally described one Palestinian killed and more than 120 injured across the West Bank. These overlapping totals must stay separate.
  20. The United Nations describes settler violence as reaching record levels. It says attacks in the first two harvest weeks exceeded the previous full season. But other tallies use different periods and totals, leaving that precise seasonal comparison uncertain.
  21. A Palestinian organization estimates that more than 147,000 olive trees were affected across the West Bank over two years. Its broad measure of trees affected doesn't tell us how many burned or were destroyed. Separately, three cars were reportedly burned near Turmus Ayya.
  22. New land-access orders reportedly require military approval for Palestinians to enter about 8,800 hectares of agricultural land. That's a reported 30 percent increase from the previous year, adding another barrier to reaching the crop beyond the immediate violence.
  23. The military and police have announced separate investigations into the attack. Their findings are still awaited, and there's no confirmed word on arrests or charges. Who beat Levine, and whether soldiers failed to protect the harvesters and journalist, remain unresolved.
  24. Police said officers were preparing to enter the scenes with an army force to collect evidence and testimony.
