- Ukrainian soldiers flew a dog and a cat out of an occupied city by drone. Both pets reached the soldiers' headquarters frightened and disoriented, but safe. An operation delivering aid to residents is also carrying their animals out. Whether two cats that escaped during loading also reached safety is still unclear.
- Oleshky is under Russian occupation in Ukraine's southern Kherson region, on the left bank of the Dnipro River. It's the city rendered as Alleski in descriptions of this rescue.
- Residents asked Ukrainian soldiers to evacuate their pets. A company commander known as Sohei decided to send cages by drone. The soldiers belonged to the National Guard's 11th Brigade, which was also preparing deliveries for people still inside the city.
- A woman placed one dog and one cat into a cage for the flight out. But two other cats escaped while she tried to load the animals. The drone carried the dog and cat away from the occupied city.
- The soldiers expected the flight to Oleshky to take around fifteen minutes. That estimate covered the outward journey; the complete rescue took longer than that single leg. At headquarters, the rescued animals were frightened and disoriented. Their safe arrival doesn't tell us how they coped physically with the journey.
- The brigade's humanitarian work includes bringing food and other aid into Oleshky. The pet evacuation grew from residents' requests during that work. Soldiers adapted an air-delivery operation to bring living animals back out.
- A separate humanitarian delivery carried over six hundred kilograms of aid in fifteen containers. That shipment included baby food and toys. Those figures describe supplies taken into Oleshky, and give a sense of the wider delivery effort supporting residents.
- An earlier, separate evacuation brought out a mother cat and five kittens in a cage beneath a heavy drone. They crossed the Dnipro on a journey of more than ten kilometres. Those six animals belong to that earlier rescue.
- In the dog-and-cat extraction, the two cats that escaped were left outside the cage during loading. Their later fate depends on what the soldiers were told afterward.
- The dog and cat reached headquarters alive. Soldiers were told the two escaped cats returned home and were rescued three nights later. Their safety still hasn't been confirmed, so there's no confirmed final total including those two cats.
