  1. Gunfire killed Andre Thomas, a leader who worked to keep other people from being shot.
  2. Thomas led Integrity & Fidelity, which works to prevent violence in Chicago and the south suburbs. His death leaves colleagues confronting that violence within their own circle, and two children without the man raising them.
  3. Investigators still have to determine who killed him and what led to the shooting.
  4. Thomas was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 400 block of West 14th Street in Chicago Heights. That's a separate municipality south of Chicago. Thomas lived in nearby Matteson, while his organization's work reached communities across the city and south suburbs.
  5. Police responded on Halloween night, Saturday, October 31, after a SoundThinking gunshot-detection alert. The call came at 9:24 p.m. Officers found Thomas wounded, and he was taken to an area hospital, where he died. He was 57. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.
  6. The descriptions differ on exactly where Thomas was shot. One places him inside his office. Another places the shooting in a parking lot near a car. Both locate the incident on the same block, but the inside-or-outside question hasn't been resolved.
  7. Surveillance video from near that block shows someone walking toward a parked car with its headlights on and driver's-side door open. Thomas was shot several times at close range. The person's identity hasn't been made public. The video description doesn't settle how the parking-lot scene fits with the office account.
  8. Thomas's family said he'd spent Halloween handing out candy before heading to his office. He was waiting for the rest of his crew. His family first identified him after the shooting, and the later official identification confirmed his name and age.
  9. Integrity & Fidelity was formed in 2021. Before leading it, Thomas had worked with violence-prevention organizations including Ceasefire. He'd spent years rebuilding his life after serving time in prison. His organization worked in Chicago neighborhoods and south suburban communities heavily affected by gun violence.
  10. Thomas argued that investing in communities could help reduce shootings. He put employment at the center of that argument, saying, “No one with a 40-hour job is going out and shooting and killing.” That was his case for jobs as prevention.
  11. Nita Ragland said Thomas was raising her children as his own. They were 12 and 14, and she described him as the only father they'd known. She was trying to work out how to tell them he wouldn't return. “This doesn't seem real ... It's like I'm in a dream that's looping,” she said.
  12. Chicago's 17th Ward alderman, David Moore, called Thomas's death an unimaginable loss for his family, friends and colleagues. His public statement also mourned the loss to people and communities Thomas had reached through his leadership and service.
  13. Detectives visited nearby businesses seeking evidence on Sunday morning, while Thomas's colleagues returned to the scene looking for answers. Business owners described recurring crime in the parking lot. They also said a police patrol car hadn't been parked there Saturday night, unlike other nights.
  14. Faith leaders and leaders of Thomas's organization planned emergency meetings within the following 24 hours to assess support for people affected. His family said he'd worked closely with law enforcement, and that police had assured them dozens of detectives were investigating.
  15. The family was describing the staffing assurance police gave them. The planned meetings' outcomes haven't been announced. For the children and his colleagues, the immediate loss reaches from home to the workplace where Thomas had gone that night.
  16. No one had been arrested by Sunday evening, November 1. It's unclear whether that has changed. Who killed Thomas and why are still unanswered questions. Illinois State Police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are helping Chicago Heights police investigate.
