- Flames engulfed a Baltimore mosque and left it heavily damaged.
- No injuries were reported. But a congregation faces substantial damage to its place of worship, and police have charged a man with arson. Investigators still have to explain how the fire began and why.
- The mosque stands on the 2600 block of Harford Road, near Gorsuch Avenue, about a block from Clifton Park. It's in the Coldstream Homestead Montebello neighborhood, where rowhomes sit alongside convenience stores, restaurants and houses of worship.
- Police identified the man charged as Shawn Fenner, who's 52. Officers initially described the person they took into custody only as a person of interest. By Monday afternoon, October 26, police had confirmed arson-related charges against him.
- Fenner faces second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning and threat of arson. Police also charged him with malicious destruction of property involving one thousand dollars or more, and reckless endangerment. Prosecutors still have to prove the allegations against him.
- The one-thousand-dollar threshold belongs to the property-destruction charge. The cost of repairing the mosque is still unknown. Firefighters put out the blaze, but the heavy damage leaves the congregation facing a recovery whose scale hasn't yet been assessed publicly.
- Responders found the mosque fully engulfed around five Sunday evening, October 25. Firefighters extinguished the flames just before five-thirty. Police took Fenner into custody at the scene Sunday, before Monday's confirmation that he faced charges.
- The timing of his formal arrest is less clear. He's described as arrested at the scene in one account, while another dates his arrest to Monday. He was transported to Central Booking. His current custody status hasn't been made clear.
- Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents and city police arson investigators believe someone deliberately set the fire. Investigators were still examining the damage and searching for clues to how it began. The cause remained under investigation.
- Investigators haven't publicly explained a motive or whether religion played a role. The charges accuse Fenner of setting the fire, while the details of the evidence behind that accusation have yet to be explained publicly.
- Assistant imam Abdul Muhaimin Abdullah said Fenner was familiar to some worshippers. His description of membership was more cautious. He said, “From what I understand, he's a member of the mosque.”
- Abdullah called the mosque “a place of peace,” where people come together for fellowship. He said the fire had set the congregation back. In his account, worshippers have been there since 1980, and this is their first incident of this kind.
