- A three-year-old brought a loaded handgun to daycare, where children passed it around. No one was injured, but a loaded firearm reached children in a classroom where adults were responsible for their care. Both parents now face misdemeanor charges, and the charges are different. How did the gun reach the child's backpack, and what has the case established so far?
- A teacher spotted the handgun being passed among students at Children's World Early Learning Center on Sheldon Road in Canton, Michigan. Staff intervened, secured the gun, and police were called. The incident happened on September 28, 2026. No shots were fired. The child had brought the loaded handgun into the classroom in his backpack.
- A holster did not keep the gun out of this child's hands. The firearm was inside the backpack in a holster, and the boy removed it before staff intervened. Describing it as secured does not establish that it was locked away or inaccessible. The children's handling of the gun and the staff's intervention are established, but the complete sequence is not: how many children touched it, how long they held it, and whether anyone pulled the trigger remain unknown.
- Both parents appeared in court on October 1 and pleaded not guilty. Brandon John Ely, 28, and Rabab Ibrahim Al Zayad, 27, were arraigned in the 35th District Court in Plymouth. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy brought the charges.
- Ely faces fourth-degree child abuse, not an unsafe-storage charge. His potential maximum is one year in jail if convicted. Al Zayad faces unsafe firearm storage, carrying a potential maximum of 93 days. Treating the two as identical unsafe-storage cases obscures that distinction. These are allegations, not convictions. The prosecution still has to establish them through the legal process, and no ruling on guilt or sentence is established.
- The parents' names also need correcting: Brandon John Ely, not Brandon Eli, and Rabab Ibrahim Al Zayad, not Rabab Alzad. Those different spellings refer to the same defendants. The underlying charging documents, arraignment orders, and complete court docket have not been independently examined.
- Ely put his own firearm count at nine in court. That is his statement, not an independently verified inventory. He was ordered to surrender all his guns, but the order is not proof that every firearm has already been turned over. Compliance remains unverified.
- Detroit police placed Ely on administrative duty. He is a Detroit police officer, and that employment action does not establish dismissal, a final disciplinary finding, or the outcome of an internal investigation. The handgun brought to daycare was not his service weapon. That distinction does not identify its owner or explain how it reached the backpack.
- The parent initially in custody was not the police-officer parent. At the September 29 stage, prosecutors were still weighing charges against a parent, including the officer. Ely was also being investigated by another agency that was not identified. Both parents' later court appearances establish that both were charged; they do not retroactively make Ely the person initially detained. Current bond amounts, custody or release status, and complete release conditions are not verified.
- Michigan's secure-storage law requires precautions before a child gains access. It took effect February 13, 2024. The requirement applies when someone stores or leaves a firearm unattended on premises under their control and knows, or reasonably should know, that a minor is or is likely to be present. The alternatives include a locked box or container, or keeping the firearm unloaded and securing it with a properly engaged locking device. A holster alone should not be confused with those protections.
- The precise statutory subsection and full elements underlying Al Zayad's charge have not been independently established. The complete penalty provisions are unavailable for that verification. The case's one-year and 93-day potential jail terms are established, but Ely's one-year exposure belongs to the separate fourth-degree child-abuse charge, not an interchangeable unsafe-storage offense.
- The toddler and a sibling have both lost their places at the daycare. The center disenrolled them and added backpack checks. The earlier description of the family being disenrolled is now more specific: two children were affected. The previous backpack-check policy is not established, nor is the number of other children present or whether the new checks have uncovered additional hazards. No finding of negligence against the center or the teacher who intervened is established.
- The gun's route into the backpack remains unexplained. What is known is that a loaded handgun reached the classroom, children could access it, staff secured it, and both parents now face separate charges. What remains unknown is who owned it, who put it there, where it had previously been stored, and what each parent knew. Ely's final employment outcome and compliance with the gun-surrender order are also unresolved. No verified next hearing date is available.
