- Trucks have crossed a four-lane border bridge that stood unused for twelve years. The new crossing connects North Korea more efficiently to its overwhelmingly dominant trading partner, China. It's intended to become their main road-freight route. How much can it change trade while sanctions and North Korea's own caution still constrain it?
- The New Yalu River Bridge links Dandong, in China's Liaoning province, with Sinuiju in North Korea. The countries opened it together on October fifteenth, twenty twenty-six. Trucks decorated with flowers and flags crossed the Yalu River in both directions after the morning inauguration.
- China financed the twin-tower, cable-stayed bridge, which stretches three thousand and twenty-six metres, about three kilometres. Its deck is twenty-eight and a half metres wide. The reported project cost was about two point two billion yuan, an estimate rather than an audited final bill.
- The older Friendship Bridge carries road and rail traffic. Its single road lane alternates direction, with trucks limited to around twenty tonnes. The new bridge provides four road lanes, two each way. The older crossing remains in use alongside it.
- The Friendship Bridge was completed in nineteen forty-three and has carried the bulk of this freight connection. The new crossing gives businesses moving permitted goods a wider alternative. Rail traffic still has its own role at the older bridge.
- The main structure was finished in October twenty fourteen, the original launch year. North Korea halted work on the connecting roads and customs facilities, leaving the crossing shut. Twelve years passed between completion and opening, while the infrastructure needed to make it useful lagged behind.
- Construction is commonly dated from late twenty ten. On opening day, authorities restricted access around the customs area and nearby viewing locations. Some hotel windows were also blocked. Those controls surrounded the inauguration; businesses still need the operating rules that will govern everyday use.
- Chinese Premier Li Qiang and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song delivered video addresses at the opening. Chinese President Xi Jinping had visited North Korea in June, his second state visit and first since twenty nineteen. The bridge gives that warmer relationship a working connection.
- North Korea's pandemic isolation and domestic economic restrictions have complicated connections even with China. Pyongyang also worries about Chinese influence over its market. South Korean experts expect sanctions and that caution to favour gradual trade growth, and warn the bridge could deepen North Korea's reliance on Beijing.
- China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the bridge would help economic exchanges, travel between the countries and people's welfare. She offered no numerical forecast. Those promised benefits depend on how the crossing is used, and on what North Korea allows through.
- China already accounts for roughly ninety-five percent of North Korea's recorded trade, with some estimates reaching ninety-eight percent. These are approximate measures, rather than an exact share for twenty twenty-five. They exclude inter-Korean trade and undeclared flows, and don't capture every form of economic dependence.
- Trade was already approaching its pre-pandemic level. Recorded two-way goods trade was about two point seven nine billion dollars in twenty nineteen. It reached two point one eight billion in twenty twenty-four, then two point seven three billion in twenty twenty-five, before this bridge opened.
- That last annual increase was roughly twenty-five to twenty-six percent. Chinese exports made up most of the total, at about two point three billion dollars, up about twenty-five percent. China's imports from North Korea reached about four hundred and forty million dollars, up about twenty-seven percent. All those figures are rounded.
- UN sanctions still prohibit North Korean exports of coal, iron and iron ore, lead and lead ore. They also prohibit seafood and textile exports. Refined petroleum supplies to North Korea face an annual aggregate cap of five hundred thousand barrels.
- That fuel cap applies across suppliers and routes, with reporting requirements and conditions covering civilian needs and sanctioned counterparties. The sanctions respond to North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes. They remain binding despite the bridge opening and the end of the UN monitoring panel's mandate in twenty twenty-four.
- The UN sanctions committee can grant exemptions case by case to facilitate humanitarian work. The rules say sanctions aren't intended to harm civilians or restrict assistance they don't prohibit. Aid organizations still need any applicable exemption, and shipments must meet the relevant conditions.
- A wider road can't restore prohibited export markets or remove fuel limits. Legal access depends on the goods, the parties involved and any required authorization. For now, trucks have crossed. Nobody has yet shown a continuing delivery schedule or sustained freight volume. Whether that traffic lowers delivery costs or improves North Koreans' everyday access to goods is still unmeasured.
