  1. Floodwater has washed out roads and left others completely collapsed.
  2. Major flooding is making travel dangerous across parts of southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah. The flood warning urges people in the affected area to avoid travel Sunday evening and overnight.
  3. The urgent question is when people can safely use those roads again.
  4. The warning footprint includes portions of five Colorado counties: Montezuma, Dolores, Archuleta, La Plata and San Miguel. Across the state line, it also includes part of San Juan County in Utah. Those county boundaries don't mean every community or road is flooded.
  5. Durango, Cortez and Blanding are among the named locations. San Juan County here means Utah. The river warning at Shiprock and the flash-flood warning in Grant County concern separate locations in New Mexico.
  6. Local law enforcement reported one and a half to three inches of rain by Sunday afternoon. That range describes rainfall reported within the warned area. It doesn't mean all six counties received the same amount.
  7. The Grand Junction weather office issued the warning Sunday, November first, and called the situation particularly dangerous. It described major flooding already happening. Widespread rain continuing through Monday is the forecast, adding to the danger while roads are already impassable.
  8. Some roads have lost pavement or the ground beneath it. Others are flooded and impassable. A driver trying to get home may face damage that will remain after the water drains away, rather than a temporarily submerged stretch of intact road.
  9. The warning doesn't identify the individual washed-out or collapsed roads. Naming a particular highway or bridge as damaged would give drivers a level of certainty they don't yet have.
  10. In La Plata County, the sheriff closed all county roads Sunday amid the flooding. That puts the county-road system under a broad closure order. It doesn't tell drivers that every state or federal highway has also been shut down.
  11. The closure decision adds a concrete local consequence to the regional warning. But a Sunday closure announcement can't tell someone whether a particular route has reopened later, especially when the warning describes physical damage as well as standing water.
  12. Monticello officials also kept Mill Site and Loyd's Lake closed until further notice Sunday afternoon. Those two named closures concern sites in southeastern Utah. They don't provide a road-by-road guide for drivers around Blanding or the wider warning area.
  13. Heavy rain had already prompted a regional flood watch on October thirtieth. That watch focused on the possibility of flooding as rain fell on saturated soils. By Sunday, the warning described runoff cutting off roads and causing damage.
  14. The earlier watch was scheduled to end at eleven Monday morning. The warning issued Sunday has a later deadline, four fifteen Monday afternoon, Mountain Standard Time. People following the earlier outlook need to keep those two deadlines separate.
  15. We don't yet know which individual routes remain damaged, which closures have been lifted, or whether the warning has been extended, replaced or canceled. Its scheduled Monday expiration doesn't guarantee that a washed-out road will be safe or repaired by then.
