Police arrested a man over Ntombifuthu Nxumalo’s death, the tenth woman’s body found in Ekurhuleni. Ten women’s bodies have been found there since July, but this arrest concerns one death. Families are still awaiting answers in the other cases. Does any evidence connect them, and what has this arrest actually established?
Nxumalo’s body was found on the morning of Saturday, September 26, at or beside Mooifontein Cemetery in the Vusimusi section of Tembisa South, east of Johannesburg. Those place names describe the same general scene, not two discoveries. Accounts differ on the precise spot within or beside the cemetery. The police statement spells her first name Ntombifuthu; some other accounts use Ntombifuthi.
She was found naked with serious head injuries and stones around her body. There were no visible stab wounds at the scene. The stones raised the possibility that she had been stoned, but that is an investigative theory, not a confirmed cause of death. Preliminary inquiries placed her at a local tavern with a female acquaintance before she left with a man who had not then been identified.
Residents near the cemetery reported hearing a woman scream and plead at about eleven at night. The available account does not securely establish which night they heard it. That reported time must not be confused with the time of the arrest.
Investigators traced a suspect from Tembisa to Mohlabaneng village in Limpopo’s Tzaneen area. With help from local police, the team found him asleep in his room and arrested him without reported incident. The arrest took place at approximately eleven p.m. on Saturday, September 26. It was announced on Sunday—not carried out on Sunday, as an initial account had it.
Acting national police commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane praised the team’s swift response and pledged continued action against murder and gender-based violence. That pledge establishes neither this man’s guilt nor a connection to the other deaths. His name, formal charges, first court date and bail position have not been established. There is no judicial finding of guilt.
The Ekurhuleni count stood at eight by September 16. Jabulile Ntimba’s body was found in Villa Liza near Dawn Park on September 17, making nine; Nxumalo’s discovery brought it to ten on September 26. Six bodies were reported found over ten days earlier in September, but the available information does not support a date-by-date reconstruction of every case. The count is of women’s bodies discovered since July—not ten murders proved to have one perpetrator.
Police offered four hundred thousand rand for information in the broader investigation when the count was eight. It was not a new reward issued exclusively for Nxumalo’s case. Investigators have found similarities among some deaths, but no conclusive evidence that the same person or people caused them all. Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has said it is too early to make a definitive connection. A serial offender has neither been established nor ruled out.
Ntimba’s case already has a separate court process. Fortunate Masilela and Tsakane Nester Msithini appeared at Boksburg Magistrates’ Court on September 21, facing allegations of premeditated murder and defeating the ends of justice. Their case was postponed to October 1 for a bail hearing; neither has been convicted. An early account counted three arrests, but a man held for questioning was released without charge. He is not a third accused.
A possible relationship dispute remains a lead in Ntimba’s case, not a proven motive and not an explanation for Nxumalo’s death or the other discoveries. The arrest in the tenth case and the charges in the ninth do not mean there were no earlier arrests; nor do they resolve the remaining investigations. Police have published no evidentiary link between the man arrested in Limpopo and any of the other nine deaths.
President Cyril Ramaphosa promised on September 24 to address the nation within a few days about measures against gender-based violence and the Ekurhuleni investigations. He spoke about violence against women at a men’s conference on September 27, but by Sunday evening no dedicated national address fulfilling that promise, or definite time for one, had been established. In Nxumalo’s case, the evidence supporting the arrest, the formal court process and any connection to another death remain unestablished.
