  1. Forty-four men survived. Eighty-three did not.
  2. That is the arithmetic of a single crossing that began on the seventh of August in The Gambia, on a wooden fishing boat bound for the Canary Islands. The Spanish Maritime Rescue Service found it drifting on the second of September, about a hundred and twenty kilometres southwest of Arguineguin, on the south coast of Gran Canaria. Forty-four living men were taken off. Five dead bodies were still on board. And at least eighty more are feared dead, among them three women and a baby.
  3. The confirmed facts are only the survivors and the five bodies. Everything above that number—83, the women, the baby—is arithmetic and testimony, not yet verified by any official. The rescue service never confirmed how many people left The Gambia. That is the gap this report exists to measure.
  4. The boat was a cayuco, a wooden West African fishing vessel. It spent twenty-six or twenty-seven days at sea, depending on whether you count from the sighting to the landing. Provisions ran out. The people aboard drank seawater. They became dehydrated, disoriented, some hallucinating. Survivors told Red Cross workers they had thrown the dead overboard as people died, until they were too weak to do it any longer. That is why of the eighty-plus who are believed to have died, only five bodies were left on the boat when the rescue ship arrived.
  5. The departure count is genuinely contested: the migrant-rights organisation Caminando Fronteras and its founder say 127 people left, including four women and a baby. Spanish broadcaster RTVE and El Pais say 128. Survivors told the Red Cross only that more than one hundred had left. The rescue agency did not confirm the total, and the Guardia Civil matched the hull markings to the seventh of August departure from The Gambia.
  6. The rescue itself came after weeks of nothing. On the second of September, at eighteen forty local time, a Salvamento Maritimo aircraft spotted the boat in twenty-knot winds and two-and-a-half-metre waves. The rescue ship Guardamar Urania reached it around eleven at night and took off the forty-four living men. Three were in critical condition and were airlifted by helicopter to the hospital in Las Palmas; the other forty-one were landed at Arguineguin in the early hours of the third, where the Red Cross treated them on the quay. Canary emergency services said six people were hospitalised for dehydration, disorientation, and signs of having drunk seawater.
  7. The timeline matters because the most awful part is what the survivors did when they were alone. They could not keep the dead aboard. They were too weak to throw them over. And by the fourth of September, the sinking cayuco had taken the last five with it.
  8. This single crossing's toll lands inside a year when the route has become deadlier even as fewer people try it. Arrivals collapsed from a record roughly forty-five thousand in twenty twenty-four to about seventeen and a half thousand in twenty twenty-five, and to about four thousand four hundred by mid-July this year—down sixty-one percent. Yet the migrant-rights group recorded six hundred and thirty-five dead or missing on the Atlantic route from January to May alone. It estimates about twenty-one deaths per one hundred arrivals in twenty twenty-six, against about fourteen in twenty twenty-five. Fewer people are attempting the crossing. A larger share of those who do are dying.
  9. This is the paradox of the year: the number of crossings has fallen sharply, but lethality has risen by half. The route is becoming a deadlier proportion of a smaller flow.
  10. The political response has been anger, not policy. The president of the Canary Islands wrote that it is intolerable that lives continue to be lost, and that the islands cannot accept as normal the fact that the Atlantic continues to be a death trap. There has been no statement from the Spanish government or The Gambia specifically about this boat. And no official year-to-date death tally for the route has been published at all.
  11. Those are the public words of the region's leader, pointing at the Atlantic itself as the killer. But no action has followed that matches the scale of the loss.
  12. So the unresolved question is whether the real scale of this crossing will ever be confirmed. Five bodies were on board and are now lost to the sea. The boat has sunk. No published figure gives a definitive count of who left. The confirmed facts remain forty-four survivors and five dead on board. Everything above that—the eighty-three the NGO counts, the three women, the baby—is arithmetic and testimony from survivors and the charity that tracked the vessel. The families have been calling for weeks. None of the missing have been found.
