  1. Rescuers removed 76 dogs from a single home and garage. The Lemont house is condemned, and the homeowner faces animal-cruelty and felony weapons charges. Many of the dogs now need help adjusting to human contact. What will it take to get them into lasting homes?
  2. Police say all 76 dogs were removed during an operation that stretched across hours. Chief Jason LoCoco described upwards of nine hours spent corralling them and arranging secure transport to shelters.
  3. Officers had gone there to search for firearms. A Cook County judge had issued a firearms restraining order connected to the warrant. LoCoco said complaints and interactions involving the homeowner had escalated in recent weeks. Police had also learned his Firearm Owner's Identification card, commonly called a FOID card, had been revoked.
  4. Officers searched a property in the 800 block of McCarthy Road on Thursday, October 22. Before serving the warrant, they determined the number of dogs posed a safety concern and called for animal-control help.
  5. Police say they recovered three firearms. The homeowner, Andrew Malak, is 58 and faces multiple animal-cruelty counts and felony weapons charges. Those are criminal allegations, and he hasn't been found guilty. Police described the property as a hoarding situation.
  6. On October 22, Malak was in custody and charges were pending. By October 23, he faced animal-cruelty and felony weapons charges. Police took him into custody without incident, and he was later released.
  7. Cook County Animal Control and the sheriff's Animal Cruelty Unit joined the response. Animal-control teams from Grundy County, Palos Hills, Bolingbrook and Evergreen Park also helped, alongside shelters and volunteers. Police said there was no threat to the public. McCarthy Street was temporarily closed between McCarthy Road and Sobieski Street that evening.
  8. Dogs had to be secured in the yard, garage and house. Rescuer Kim Arias, founder of Ruby Whiskers Animal Rescue, described catching them as “like chasing wild animals.” At least a dozen dogs were visible running around the backyard.
  9. The house was unlivable and has been condemned, with warnings posted to stay away. Grime covered floors and walls. Debris lay scattered inside, and dirty plastic bins appeared to serve as makeshift dog beds. Arias said her eyes and throat burned. She covered her face with her shirt and said, “You really couldn't breathe when you walked in.”
  10. Chief Jason LoCoco described the dogs as fairly healthy, active and friendly, though skittish from limited human contact. Arias said, “I did not see any aggression. I saw fear, for sure.” Shelters would still need to assess each dog's needs.
  11. Neighbors described years of noise and odor. Myra Bertlang said noise came at all hours. Over roughly the preceding month, she said, the smell had become “horrendous,” which she associated with dog feces. She hadn't realized 76 dogs were inside. Neighbor Ian Carter also described persistent noise and a terrible smell.
  12. Police kept the final four dogs overnight because no more shelter space was available. LoCoco said a shelter transfer was expected. That temporary shortage shows how difficult it was to find immediate space for so many animals.
  13. Bertlang said neighbors had asked the village for years to intervene. She said officials told her their “hands were tied” because no ordinance limited how many dogs someone could keep. She wanted emergency action. The village's earlier handling of those complaints is still unclear.
  14. Chicago's Anti-Cruelty received 33 dogs late Friday, October 23. They ranged from eight-week-old puppies to adults. The shelter said many had limited experience with human contact and would need patience and individual care as they adjusted.
  15. Arias took three dogs through Ruby Whiskers. She anticipated foster homes and adoption availability in the next few days. She also worried some dogs might be pregnant. Anti-Cruelty's immediate work was to settle its dogs, get to know them and assess their needs. As of Saturday morning, October 24, its adoption timetable was still unclear.
  16. The dogs are out, but nobody has provided a complete accounting of their placements or confirmed how many have reached permanent homes. Each dog's readiness will depend on that individual assessment and adjustment. Malak is due in court Monday, October 26, in Bridgeview.
