- Up to fifteen beaver families can now return to waters around Loch Ness. They could create wetlands and help moderate floods, but farmers want protection when the animals change how water moves. How will the project make room for wildlife while managing the effects on people's land?
- NatureScot has licensed Trees for Life and the Beaver Trust to release up to fifteen beaver families over three years. That ceiling counts family groups. The total number of individual animals hasn't been announced. NatureScot announced its approval on October thirtieth.
- The permission covers agreed sites across the River Ness catchment, the wider area draining into its waters. The project describes beaver-friendly waterbodies close to Loch Ness between Fort Augustus and Lochend. That broad stretch gives the setting, while the licensed sites remain undisclosed.
- The project plans to identify those sites once the animals have been safely released. The permission allows releases at agreed locations across the catchment, so it doesn't put every family directly into the River Ness itself. The setting includes waters around the loch where the project sees suitable habitat.
- NatureScot identified the River Ness catchment as one of Scotland's most suitable locations for beavers in 2022. Its assessment concluded that the animals could significantly boost biodiversity, and judged the landscape at low risk of negative effects from their activity.
- Beavers create ponds and wetlands that other species can use. Their activity can also moderate water flows during floods and periods of water scarcity. Those are the benefits the project hopes to restore here. The same changes can affect managed land, including farms, so habitat restoration brings practical decisions about where water goes.
- A widely cited historical record places Scotland's beavers around Loch Ness in 1526 and 1527. They were hunted to extinction about four hundred years ago. Scotland's first reintroduction came in 2009, making this permission a further geographical step in their return.
- The old Loch Ness record gives this restoration its roughly five-hundred-year connection. It records where beavers lived at that point; their disappearance came later. For the present proposal, NatureScot assessed the application under the Scottish Code for Conservation Translocations, the country's guidance for moving wildlife for conservation.
- More than seventy-three percent of consultation respondents supported the proposal, NatureScot says. That's support among the people who took part. It doesn't tell us what every catchment resident thinks, and land managers and residents also raised concerns about potential effects on farming.
- Community discussions were planned for September and October 2025. A community event notice dated February eleventh, 2026 described strong support alongside farming concerns. It offered a dedicated drop-in for farmers and crofters to discuss managing the effects. Support for restoring wildlife and worries about working land were both part of that engagement.
- Trees for Life's Alan McDonnell calls beavers allies in tackling the climate and biodiversity crises. He says communities and local businesses have shown huge interest, and his team met people locally to hear their views firsthand.
- Farmers' concerns now carry into the management of the approved project. The applicants have monitoring and mitigation plans, backed by NatureScot's existing beaver mitigation scheme. These are intended to identify and manage problems as the animals establish themselves. The approval puts those plans in place for a programme whose practical effects still lie ahead.
- NatureScot's Robbie Kernahan says the agency has assessed those plans and believes potential conflicts can be resolved. That commitment includes a response when beavers harm prime agricultural land and measures to manage the effects have failed, or can't be used.
- The animals will undergo appropriate health screening before release. If they negatively affect prime agricultural land, and mitigation fails or isn't possible, they can be trapped and moved under licence. Farmers therefore have a route to seek action when problems arise, while relocation remains conditional and requires permission.
- Releases could begin as early as November 2026, but a start date hasn't been confirmed. The first confirmed release will establish how many families and individual animals are involved. The project plans to disclose the sites after the beavers have been safely released.
