  1. Thunderstorms have dropped up to an inch of rain in northwestern Grant County.
  2. The National Weather Service warns that flash flooding is underway or could begin shortly. Drivers face a developing flood threat, with more rain possible before the warning expires at eight tonight.
  3. Whether that threat will require a longer warning is still unresolved.
  4. Mule Creek and Buckhorn are among the communities at risk in northwestern Grant County, New Mexico. The warning identifies both as places that could experience flash flooding. It doesn't mean flooding has reached both communities.
  5. The warning runs through eight p.m. Mountain Standard Time on November first. The El Paso and Santa Teresa weather office issued it that afternoon, as thunderstorms produced heavy rain across the warned area.
  6. Radar and automated gauges indicated half an inch to one inch had already fallen. Another one to one and a half inches was possible. That additional rainfall is the immediate concern as the flood threat develops.
  7. Those rainfall amounts describe water falling across the area. They don't tell a driver how deep water might be at a crossing. The possible additional rain is a forecast, and the storm's final rainfall total isn't known yet.
  8. A broader flood watch covers Grant County from noon until ten p.m. Mountain Standard Time. The localized warning expires at eight. The watch's later ending doesn't extend the warning. Each alert has its own coverage and expiration.
  9. The broader watch also covers northern Hidalgo County and western Sierra County. Silver City, Lordsburg and Gila are among its named locations, along with the Gila and upper Mimbres watersheds. The weather office also highlighted the potential for heavy afternoon and evening rain, especially in the Gila Wilderness.
  10. Drivers should turn around rather than enter a flooded road. For people moving through the warned area, that instruction applies wherever water covers the route. A warning's expiration time can't tell you whether a particular crossing is safe.
  11. The weather office could extend or replace the warning, or allow it to expire at eight. Specific local road impacts haven't been confirmed. Even if the warning expires on schedule, drivers should still turn around at flooded roads.
