- A mother and her son died in hospital, raising their family's fire deaths to five.
- On October 21, we reported three children dead and a woman and boy hospitalized in critical condition. Both patients later died. The woman was the children's mother, Jasmine Henson. Her husband and another son survived.
- Investigators still have to explain what started the fire and why four children couldn't get out.
- The fire happened in Van Zandt County, near Canton, at a home near County Roads 4127 and 4128. Henson and her son died at Parkland Hospital in Dallas later that Wednesday, October 21.
- Relatives have identified the children who died as Robert Mitchell, Troy Mitchell, Levi Mitchell and Avril Mitchell. Their mother was 27. Three children died at the home. Robert was the fourth child firefighters found inside, and he later died in hospital.
- The five deaths include Henson and four of her children. The three children who died at the scene were boys aged eight and five, and a three-year-old girl. Henson and Robert were the two patients initially described as critically injured.
- Henson's husband and their seven-year-old son got out on their own with minor injuries. The children's paternal grandfather, Mike Mitchell, said the father and surviving child were recovering. They're the two surviving members of a family that lost a mother and four children.
- Fire officials initially described Robert as ten. The Dallas County medical examiner identified him as nine. One later account still gave his age as ten. That difference hasn't been resolved.
- Fire Marshal Kevin Palmer said crews were dispatched shortly after 12:30 a.m. to a structure fire with people trapped inside. Canton, South Van Zandt, Ben Wheeler and Wills Point fire departments responded. Three people had escaped when crews arrived, but four children were still inside.
- South Van Zandt Battalion Chief Jason Foster said the mobile home was already about half involved in fire when Canton firefighters arrived. He described the heaviest fire toward the middle and right. The children were found on the left, in the bedroom area.
- Foster said trees prevented access from one position and a window was partly boarded. Crews cut through the exterior wall on the left side, where the children had been reported. That's where firefighters brought them out. Foster and his crew had been called in as backup.
- Three people were already outside, while four children remained inside. Firefighters breached the wall and quickly found them. Foster said a child was handed out to him as he approached to help search. He and other rescuers immediately started CPR.
- Three children had already died. The fourth went to a local emergency room before being airlifted to another hospital. A second victim was airlifted directly from the scene. Two other people went by ambulance as a precaution. Foster said crews brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes. He's been a firefighter for 28 years and said these calls never get easier.
- Several of the children attended Canton Elementary and Canton Intermediate schools. Canton ISD said counselors and support staff would be available on campus in the coming days to help students, staff and families affected by the deaths.
- Relatives and neighbors are also organizing practical help for the surviving father and son. A meal train is underway, and people are collecting clothing in Canton and Mineola. Henson's sister, Brooke Henson, said the family wasn't ready to comment publicly. She described the loss as terrible.
- Donations are being gathered through GoFundMe and the Henson Family Donation Account at Broadstreet Bank. A benefit barbecue has been announced for the weekend at 450 West Kansas Street in Van. The homeowner said it would continue while food remained available.
- Foster thought the fire might have started near the front door. Investigators haven't issued a final finding on its origin or cause. They also haven't said whether smoke alarms were present, working or sounded. The fire marshal's office describes its investigation as being in its early stages, with more information to come. Investigators haven't explained why the four children couldn't get out.
