- A scrub fire at Waiouru reignited after the Defence Force thought it was extinguished.
- Military and civilian firefighters are still working to bring it under control. Light rain and lower winds have helped, but crews remain committed on the ground and in the air.
- How much progress have they made since the fire came back?
- The fire is burning in the Waiouru Military Training Area, near the Desert Road on the Central Plateau. That road forms part of State Highway 1. The Defence Force says live-fire training started the blaze.
- The fire's return overturned the earlier belief that it had been put out. The Defence Force says it initially burned during training on Sunday, October 25, before reigniting on Monday morning. Nobody has explained why it reignited.
- The Defence Force describes Sunday's fire as having been thought controlled and extinguished. Monday brought a renewed emergency response. By Tuesday afternoon, firefighters were still working across the fireground, even as the weather helped reduce active burning.
- Fire and Emergency responded at about 10:15 on Monday morning. Crews from Waiouru, Tūrangi and Southern Lakes were among those attending. As the fire expanded through the day, the response involved both firefighting crews and Defence Force personnel.
- Monday's response included five helicopter crews and nine firefighting crews, alongside thirteen Defence Force staff. Those figures describe crews and individual military staff separately. They describe Monday's operation; Tuesday's update didn't give a fresh deployment count.
- One mid-afternoon description put the flames across an area about 400 by 400 metres. Separately, the Defence Force estimated about 230 hectares had burned in the afternoon. Those descriptions don't provide a reliable, like-for-like measure of how quickly the fire spread.
- Motorists recorded large plumes of smoke south and north of Waiouru township. Fire and Emergency shift manager Becca Jennings described a fairly isolated fireground on Monday, with no reported injuries and no threat to nearby buildings or the Desert Road.
- A separate Fire and Emergency safety assessment on Monday said there were no concerns for anyone's safety. Current traffic restrictions on the Desert Road still need confirmation.
- The evening size estimate needs care. It used ambiguous wording and paired measurements that aren't equivalent. The afternoon estimate of about 230 hectares and the later evening figures remain separate estimates, rather than points on a precise growth curve.
- The evening estimate of about 1.5 square kilometres came with a conflicting figure, 238 hectares. But 1.5 square kilometres equals 150 hectares. And 238 hectares equals 2.38 square kilometres. The definitive evening area still needs confirmation.
- A later Monday estimate also put the area at about 238 hectares. That doesn't resolve the conflicting units in the evening description, or tell us how much farther the fire spread overnight.
- The Defence Force warned on Monday that the blaze could take a further 24 hours to extinguish. That estimate left crews facing more work after the fire's return. Firefighting continued into Tuesday afternoon.
- Tuesday's improvement came from light rain and lower winds. Fire and Emergency said those conditions had reduced the extent of active fire. That describes less active burning across the fireground, rather than a new measurement of the total land already burned.
- By Tuesday afternoon, crews had made progress in better weather, but Fire and Emergency hadn't declared the blaze contained. Military and civilian firefighters continued working together, with ground and aerial crews tackling separate parts of the fireground.
