  1. Air New Zealand has brought Western Sydney its first international passengers. Sydney's new airport now has an overseas connection, alongside its domestic services. But passengers are arriving before the airport's rail link is ready.
  2. The immediate test is how much of the promised network passengers can use, and how they reach the terminal.
  3. Cargo flights began on July twenty-sixth. Jetstar opened passenger services on October twenty-fifth, flying to the Gold Coast. Then, on October twenty-sixth, Air New Zealand flight NZ165 arrived from Auckland, New Zealand. Flight NZ166 subsequently departed for Auckland, completing the inaugural international rotation.
  4. That return flight has happened. Its advertised departure was eight fifty-five in the morning, but that timetable doesn't tell us when it actually took off. The completed arrival and departure were both on Monday, October twenty-sixth.
  5. The Auckland arrival was Monday morning, followed by a stopover and the return departure. The exact touchdown and takeoff minutes haven't been confirmed. Air New Zealand's announced pattern is three return services a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
  6. Wednesday, October twenty-eighth, is therefore the next scheduled operating day. Seven airlines have signed on to the airport, though most haven't started their routes. Singapore Airlines is expected in November. VietJet, Fiji Airways and Qatar Airways are part of the planned expansion.
  7. Nadi, Ho Chi Minh City and Doha are among the prospective destinations. Those plans would broaden the airport's reach considerably. For passengers booking now, the dependable starting point is the airline's actual timetable, with further international launches still ahead.
  8. The first domestic service was sold out, with a reported one hundred and eighty-eight passengers aboard. Hundreds gathered to watch Jetstar's departure for the Gold Coast. The destination airport also confirmed welcoming the flight, so the opening was more than a scheduled event.
  9. Jetstar says the flight departed at eleven in the morning. Takeoff was reportedly just before eleven thirty. Those may describe different moments, such as leaving the gate and becoming airborne, but nobody has explained the difference. They don't prove a delay.
  10. Advance opening schedules also listed a Gold Coast return and a Melbourne departure. Those entries tell passengers what was planned. They don't confirm that each flight subsequently operated.
  11. The new airport sits at Badgerys Creek, about forty-five kilometres from Sydney's central business district. It's also called Nancy-Bird Walton Airport. Sydney Kingsford Smith is a separate airport, and St Marys is the interchange passengers use for the new airport's bus connection.
  12. Drivers have a new toll-free approach. The sixteen-kilometre M12 was completed in March. Some early passengers described easy access, parking and check-in. Saras and Mohammad Jamil, travelling from Denham Court, had a different experience. They said limited signs made the airport difficult to find.
  13. Buses and a free shuttle provide the main public-transport connection with St Marys. The airport metro is still unfinished. Its passenger opening date remains unclear, leaving travellers without cars dependent on a road connection for the final part of their journey.
  14. Julie Lundmark and a friend arrived on Jetstar flight JQ373 and realised after landing that they were at Western Sydney. Their car was parked at Sydney Airport. She hoped a friend could drive them back, estimating that journey at about two hours.
  15. That was her estimate, rather than a standard transfer time. Another passenger, arriving from Auckland, initially confused Western Sydney with Western Australia and thought he was going to Perth. For those travellers, the airport name changed the ground journey they expected to make.
  16. The airport can operate twenty-four hours a day, giving airlines more flexibility than curfew-constrained Kingsford Smith. That operating window creates room for growth. The scale of the airport's ambitions, though, stretches decades beyond this opening week's flights.
  17. Chief executive Simon Hickey projects traffic approaching ten million passengers a year in the early to mid-twenty-thirties. His longer-term forecast reaches eighty-two million annually in the twenty-sixties. That larger airport would need more terminals and another runway.
  18. Hickey also links up to about eight thousand five hundred precinct jobs to reaching ten million annual passengers. The airport's projection of more than two hundred and fifty destinations by the end of twenty-twenty-seven is also an ambition. It's unclear how many would be direct flights rather than connections.
  19. The government says additional airport capacity could strengthen airline competition and put downward pressure on fares. Passengers will have to judge those benefits as more services begin. For now, the completed Auckland rotation adds an overseas connection while the wider network is still developing.
  20. Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King has also acknowledged aircraft-noise impacts on local communities. As airlines make use of the airport's round-the-clock operating window, residents around the flight paths will share in the consequences of that growth.
