- Firefighters have reached 11 percent containment on the Wild River Fire.
- Crews face steep, rugged terrain in a forest still in drought. Most of the fire's perimeter hadn't been reported contained by Monday evening. How much ground has burned, and what progress have crews made?
- The fire is burning in White Mountain National Forest, in New Hampshire's Coos County. Its location is about seven miles southeast of Gorham and south of Gilead, Maine, near the state border. The area includes Wild River and Evans Notch.
- The fire was first reported Sunday afternoon, November first. That tells us when someone reported it; the time it actually started is still unclear. By the following afternoon, crews were working to establish a perimeter as quickly as possible.
- The fire covered about 300 acres Monday afternoon, when crews still had no containment. By Monday evening, they had reached 11 percent. A third-party tracker listed 288 acres Tuesday morning, with containment unchanged at 11 percent.
- The reason for that lower acreage figure isn't clear. Revised mapping or another adjustment could account for the difference, but nobody has explained which. Tuesday's figure remains a third-party tracking estimate.
- Steep slopes are making it difficult for firefighters to reach the fire. Crews were trying to establish a perimeter Monday, but the rugged ground complicates access. Getting people into position is part of the work of bringing this fire under control.
- The fire is burning through timber, standing dead trees known as snags, and leaf litter. Those fuels sit in an area still experiencing drought. They describe the conditions crews are working in, while investigators continue looking into what caused the fire.
- More than 40 people were assigned to the response Monday afternoon. National Forest officials gave that staffing count while crews were working to secure the perimeter. Reaching the fire remained difficult even with those personnel assigned.
- An undated tracker entry lists 50 personnel, but it doesn't tell us when that count applied. It can't show whether staffing increased after Monday afternoon.
- New Hampshire's fire danger ranged from low to moderate, while the southern half of Maine had high fire danger. Those are regional assessments. The fire itself is in New Hampshire, where crews are dealing with drought and difficult terrain.
- Officials said Monday that the fire posed no significant threat to property. That was their assessment at the time, while the cause remained under investigation. The immediate operational challenge was reaching the fire and securing more of its perimeter.
- Storm damage to Wild River Road is the reason the Forest Service gives for closing Wild River Campground. People checking access would still need any fire-specific instructions separately. The campground's undated closure notice addresses damage from the storm.
- A dated official update is still needed for the fire's current acreage and any fire-specific access restrictions or evacuation instructions. Monday evening's 11 percent remains the latest dated containment figure in the incident reporting.
