- Both survivors of the helicopter crash have left the hospital. Pilot Tomas Pendas died despite lifesaving efforts. Deputies now describe the survivors' injuries as minor.
- On November fifth, we reported one death and two hospitalized survivors. Their names were unknown, and their medical conditions were disputed. Investigators still have to explain why the boat-filming flight went down.
- Miami-Dade deputies have identified Pendas, who was sixty-three, as the pilot killed in the crash. The survivors are Ryan McCoy, fifty-two, and Ryan Ferraro, twenty-seven. Both men have been released from a Miami hospital.
- The helicopter went down off Nixon Beach, near the southwestern side of Key Biscayne. It crashed in Biscayne Bay, close to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. Rescuers brought all three men to the dock at No Name Harbor.
- Deputies say the commercial helicopter was filming boats and heading south when it crashed late Wednesday morning, November fourth. The sheriff's office received a mayday call about a helicopter down in the water at about eleven thirty that morning.
- Both survivors were initially described as critical, and later as critical but stable. Deputies now say both had minor injuries and have left the hospital. Nobody has explained the medical assessments behind those different descriptions.
- Before this update, the early descriptions also differed over whether both men were critical or one was stable. The hospital release settles their latest outcome. It doesn't tell us how doctors assessed each man during treatment.
- A civilian on a boat was performing CPR on Pendas when Marine Patrol units arrived. Deputies took over and brought him to No Name Harbor. City of Miami Rescue personnel arrived there, but Pendas was pronounced dead despite continued efforts.
- His rescue unfolded alongside the search for McCoy and Ferraro. U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations personnel located the two men while deputies were trying to save Pendas.
- Customs and Border Protection took McCoy and Ferraro to the same dock at No Name Harbor. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue then airlifted both men to a Miami hospital. They were described as critical but stable at that stage.
- Three men were aboard, and the one death and two injured survivors account for everyone on the helicopter. Local rescue agencies, Customs and Border Protection and the Coast Guard participated in the response.
- Rescuers faced storms, wind, rain and dangerous currents as they worked to reach people in the water. Those conditions complicated the response. Investigators haven't said whether weather contributed to the crash.
- Rescue units were photographed in the Boater's Grill parking lot inside Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. The photograph was timestamped eleven forty-seven that morning, documenting the shore-side response. Rescue photographs also showed occupants being helped from the water.
- The helicopter lay upside down in the bay. Images showed two yellow emergency floats attached to its landing skids. Their presence leaves investigators with the question of how the aircraft ended up inverted.
- The National Transportation Safety Board identified the helicopter as a Robinson R44 Two, a more specific version of the R44 model identified by the Federal Aviation Administration. The safety board is investigating, with the FAA also involved.
- Pendas owned an aerial-media and photography company. Investigators haven't identified which company operated this particular flight or who commissioned the filming. The survivors are out of the hospital, but investigators have yet to explain why the southbound boat-filming flight crashed. No cause has been released.
