  1. A car struck a tanker shielding responders, seriously injuring its driver and totaling the truck. Brookfield depends on trucks to bring water to fires, and now its fire department needs another tanker. Investigators still have to determine why the driver hit a parked emergency vehicle with its lights flashing.
  2. The collision happened on northbound Interstate 89 in Brookfield, Vermont, on October 27, 2026. Police logged the first emergency response at twelve thirty-eight p.m. Crews were dealing with a crash involving a passenger car and a box truck.
  3. Brookfield's Tanker 1 closed the right travel lane so firefighters and rescue crews could work. Traffic was passing through one remaining lane. The tanker was parked with its emergency lights activated when a northbound Toyota Prius struck the rear. The protective truck became the scene of a second emergency.
  4. The fire department described a high-speed impact that ruptured the water tank and left the sedan lodged underneath the truck. Crews switched to rescuing the trapped driver. They freed the driver and requested DART, the helicopter medical transport service.
  5. The Prius was a 2024 model, driven by a 28-year-old Burlington resident. Police withheld the driver's name and said the driver was wearing a seat belt. The injuries were serious, and the car was a total loss. A helicopter took the driver for emergency treatment.
  6. The driver went to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Firefighters described the driver as conscious and coherent when leaving the scene. There's been no further update on the driver's condition. Two dogs were also inside the Prius, and one suffered serious injuries.
  7. Both dogs went to Country Animal Hospital. The tanker was a 2012 Freightliner M2, operated by a 52-year-old Brookfield resident who was also wearing a seat belt. The operator reported no injuries. The fire chief said the operator saw the car approaching in a mirror and braced for the impact.
  8. No Brookfield firefighters or other responders were reported injured. East Randolph Fire, Randolph Center Fire and Randolph Village Fire helped secure the scene and close the highway, alongside Randolph Police. Their crews supported responders whose own truck had just been struck. Losing that truck also creates a problem for future fire calls.
  9. Fire Chief Robert Coniff says Brookfield doesn't have city water to draw on for firefighting. His department has to transport its water and use portable bags. With Tanker 1 totaled, the department is searching for another truck to support that work.
  10. Police and firefighters recorded different mile markers for the incident. That leaves the precise highway location unresolved, even though both describe the collision in Brookfield. The difference also means either marker, used alone, would give a false impression of certainty about where the tanker was positioned.
  11. Police list northbound mile marker 37.2. The fire department places its traffic-control and lane-protection operation at northbound mile marker 38.6. Nobody has explained the difference. The established location is northbound I-89 in Brookfield, where crews were protecting the earlier crash scene.
  12. The driver's fiancé says motorists didn't get enough warning of the closed lane. He believes more warning could have prevented the collision. The tanker had flashing emergency lights, but investigators haven't determined whether the overall warning arrangement was adequate. The weather was clear, and the road was dry.
  13. Police haven't said why the driver failed to avoid the tanker. Trooper Abigail Sikora of the Berlin Barracks is handling the investigation. The October 28 police release lists a civil violation complaint and court action as pending, without identifying an issued charge.
  14. Brookfield is also trying to arrange a temporary replacement. The department was exploring a tanker loan from neighboring Williamstown, but Williamstown still had to approve it. The loan hadn't been confirmed. Brookfield was waiting to hear from its insurance company while searching for a permanent replacement.
  15. Getting a new tanker could take about one year. That's a possible wait, and the department doesn't have a fixed delivery date. A temporary loan would help bridge that gap, but Brookfield was still seeking approval to borrow Williamstown's truck.
