  1. A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck far offshore from Easter Island.
  2. Disaster monitors estimate low humanitarian impact, with the epicenter far from island and mainland communities. The uncertainty is whether the earthquake caused any effects along the nearest coasts.
  3. The epicenter was 1,483 kilometers southeast of Hanga Roa, Easter Island's main settlement. It was also 2,154 kilometers west of Lebu, on mainland Chile, and 2,157 kilometers west-northwest of Ancud.
  4. The earthquake occurred on October 29, 2026, at 7:49 UTC, less than four hours before this report. Easter Island is also known as Rapa Nui. Its name provides a geographic reference for an earthquake well out in the southeastern Pacific.
  5. Hanga Roa lies far from the earthquake's center. The distances to island and mainland settlements describe where the quake happened. They don't tell us how many residents experienced shaking.
  6. Seismologists have reviewed two solutions for the earthquake. Both give magnitude 6.4. The U.S. Geological Survey uses a moment-magnitude measure and places the origin 10 kilometers below the surface.
  7. The depth estimates differ by seven kilometers. The U.S. agency gives 10 kilometers, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre gives three. Their origin times differ by one second, and their epicenter coordinates also differ slightly. Both describe a shallow earthquake in the same offshore region.
  8. The European solution places the epicenter 1,487 kilometers east-southeast of Hanga Roa and 2,203 kilometers west of Valdivia, Chile. These are separate agency estimates for the same event.
  9. Disaster monitors classify the earthquake's potential humanitarian impact as low. Their assessment weighs the magnitude, the population potentially exposed and people's vulnerability. It estimates possible consequences before a full picture of conditions on the ground is available.
  10. The shaking-loss alert has a separate discrepancy. PAGER, the system used to estimate earthquake fatalities and economic losses, appears differently across the event listings.
  11. One listing carries no shaking-loss alert, while another carries green. Green indicates a low likelihood of fatalities and economic losses. It's unclear when any underlying alert changed.
  12. A green estimate still leaves actual local conditions to be checked. The other early indicators also need care.
  13. The shaking model listed intensity one. The public-report count stood at zero nearly four hours after the earthquake. Those indicators can't tell us whether anyone actually felt shaking.
  14. Tsunami monitoring carries another important limit. The earthquake listing has no tsunami flag, and disaster monitors display zero-meter values in two wave fields.
  15. Both wave fields show zero meters, but they haven't been confirmed as tide-gauge measurements. An event-specific tsunami determination from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center or Chile's naval tsunami authority hasn't been confirmed either.
  16. The low-impact estimate supports a limited expectation of harm, while coastal effects still need confirmation. No casualties, damage or inundation have been confirmed.
