  1. A gunman fired more than 800 rounds in the shootout that killed a deputy. Sheriff Kevin Bridger gave that figure Friday, identifying the gunman as forty-two-year-old Mi Van Nguyen.
  2. Canton police Officer Chris Watson survived an arm wound and is recovering after surgery.
  3. On October 21, we reported a deputy killed, an officer wounded and a suspect found dead. We left all three unnamed, and the wounded officer's condition was unknown.
  4. Investigators still have to determine how Nguyen received his fatal gunshot wound.
  5. Officers went to Nguyen's home on State Highway 198, just south of Canton in Van Zandt County. The home was in the highway's 4300 block. Sheriff's deputies were helping Canton police serve two felony arrest warrants.
  6. The encounter unfolded Tuesday night, October 20, around ten. Bridger described gunfire beginning roughly twenty minutes after officers arrived. Those are approximate times. Nguyen opened fire from inside the residence toward officers outside, and officers returned fire, the sheriff said.
  7. The warrants accused Nguyen of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault on a peace officer. They gave officers grounds to attempt an arrest. The allegations hadn't been tested at trial, and they don't explain why he opened fire.
  8. Deputy Ahmed “Adam” Al-Sherifi and Watson were both struck. Al-Sherifi died. His brother had earlier identified him as Adam Sherifi, before the sheriff's office formally named him. Deputy Brandon Fontenot was also among the personnel involved in the warrant-service attempt.
  9. Watson was shot in the right arm and flown to Plano for surgery. Bridger said he's stable and recovering. His arm injury, surgery and stable condition were already public before Friday's briefing. His recovery continues.
  10. Another officer helped provide lifesaving assistance while the gunfire continued. Bridger praised that officer's focus, saying, “He stayed focused and protected everyone.” The sheriff's ammunition figure describes the scale of the firing. He hasn't explained how the rounds were counted.
  11. Al-Sherifi was a husband and father of two children, including a newborn. His widow and mother attended Friday's briefing, surrounded by fellow deputies. Bridger told them there were no words he could offer to take away their pain.
  12. Bridger also said, “This kind of evil has no place in our communities.” He used those words to condemn the attack. Investigators are still working through the exchange of gunfire.
  13. Nguyen was found dead inside the home after the firing ended. Officials haven't determined whether his fatal gunshot wound was self-inflicted or caused by law-enforcement gunfire. The Texas Rangers are investigating, with the sheriff's office cooperating.
