  1. Kade Tuttle called police for help getting into his home and died outside its door.
  2. Police arrested his roommate, 47-year-old James Stacey Riedman, after a negotiated surrender. Detectives allege he fired through their closed apartment door, killing the 24-year-old.
  3. Will prosecutors file formal charges, and what will a court make of his claim that he feared being hurt?
  4. Officers found Tuttle on the ground outside the apartment door with an apparent gunshot wound. They tried to help him, but he died at the scene. The apartment complex sits on Redwood Road, near 800 North in Salt Lake City.
  5. Tuttle himself had called the emergency dispatcher. He said his roommate had locked him out of their shared apartment and wouldn't let him back inside. When officers arrived, they could see someone inside, but that person refused to come out. Police called in their SWAT team and crisis negotiators.
  6. Police dispatched officers at 1:05 p.m. on November third. Riedman surrendered that afternoon, reportedly around 4:30. Police identified Tuttle and announced the arrest November fourth. The shooting and surrender were part of that single Tuesday incident.
  7. Negotiators worked for several hours before Riedman came out voluntarily. Police took him into custody without a further reported incident. Detectives initially hadn't determined whether the fatal wound was self-inflicted. By the next day, they were accusing Riedman of shooting Tuttle through the door. Their homicide investigation now centers on what Riedman told them afterward.
  8. Riedman told detectives he'd rented Tuttle a room several weeks earlier in an apartment he owned. He described repeated disagreements and said he felt disrespected and taken advantage of. Those grievances came from Riedman's account of their relationship.
  9. Riedman said he deliberately locked Tuttle out because of those grievances and concerns about his behavior. He said Tuttle returned, knocked and demanded entry, then tried calling him. Riedman didn't answer. He claimed he became afraid when Tuttle threatened to kick down the door, and feared Tuttle might hurt him or recruit others to do so.
  10. Riedman claimed he feared being harmed and intended to scare Tuttle away. Detectives said he couldn't give reasonable facts explaining why he believed he faced immediate danger. A court hasn't decided whether his claimed fear justified firing through the door.
  11. Police say Riedman described getting a gun, pointing it at the closed door and firing one round through it. He aimed toward where Tuttle had been knocking. Detectives allege that round struck and killed Tuttle. The account of the shot, and Riedman's stated intention to frighten him, remain allegations to be tested in court.
  12. Investigators say Riedman admitted hearing a gasp outside after firing. He kept the door closed and didn't check whether anyone had been hurt. He also didn't call police or emergency medical services, leaving Tuttle outside the apartment where officers later found him.
  13. Detectives also say Riedman hid the firearm in his bedroom. They allege he picked up the spent cartridge casing and concealed that, too. Those alleged actions are part of the obstruction investigation, alongside the investigation into the fatal shot. Police booked him for investigation of both offenses after questioning him.
  14. A teenager was in the apartment directly opposite Riedman's door, investigators said. The alleged shot passed into a shared residential space. Other residents at the complex were told to shelter in place while police dealt with the barricade and negotiated a surrender.
  15. Police closed Redwood Road in both directions near the complex for hours. The disruption continued through the armed standoff and the response surrounding it. After Riedman surrendered, detectives worked to obtain a search warrant so they could enter and examine the apartment as part of their investigation into Tuttle's death.
  16. Riedman was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of first-degree felony murder and second-degree felony obstruction of justice, one count each. By November fourth, he was reportedly being held without bail. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
  17. Detectives now allege that Riedman killed Tuttle through the closed door after locking him out. Any prosecution would have to prove its case and address his claimed justification for firing. We don't yet know whether prosecutors have formally filed charges, or what a court will decide about his detention and his claimed fear for his safety.
