  1. On October 1, we reported an uncertain advance. Now government-aligned forces have entered Mekelle. The reported recapture reaches Tigray’s political center and its main airport, but the opposition says it will keep fighting. Does taking the capital establish lasting control—or change where this war is fought?
  2. Ethiopian federal troops and allied fighters reportedly retook the city on October 3 after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front withdrew. The TPLF calls its retreat temporary and says it will continue fighting and governing remotely. Independent on-site verification is not yet confirmed, and the precise operational sequence remains unresolved.
  3. The broad advance extends beyond a single armed group’s claim. Federal forces entered the city, and the airport changed hands. One account places allied militia fighters in central Mekelle on Saturday afternoon, October 3, with Ethiopian troops following. The withdrawal announcement is dated to Saturday evening. Those details do not establish exactly when withdrawal, airport capture and entry into different neighborhoods happened relative to one another, or how control was divided between troops and their allies.
  4. The prime minister’s office had not immediately commented by October 4. There is also an unresolved contradiction over public statements: one local account said neither side had issued one, while other accounts date the TPLF withdrawal announcement to October 3. No verified commander’s name or detailed security arrangements are established.
  5. The airport’s recapture reverses a recent TPLF gain. An allied force identifies it as Alula Aba Nega Airport; a local account places it roughly ten kilometers from central Mekelle. The TPLF had seized the facility during the preceding week. Ethiopian Airlines suspended Tigray flights afterward. Military possession does not establish that civilian flights have resumed.
  6. One account dates the earlier airport seizure to September 23; reporting available on September 26 already described the resulting flight suspension. There is no established reopening schedule. Continued descriptions of the takeover amid renewed fighting through October 5 also do not identify a specific, verified battle after the October 3–4 change of control. Neither an end to fighting nor a new post-takeover battle can be inferred from that wording alone.
  7. The capital’s reported capture overtakes the earlier estimate that federal troops were about seventy kilometers away. That estimate described the advance on September 30, as forces made ground in southern and eastern Tigray and heavy fighting continued near Alamata, close to the Afar boundary. It is not a present frontline position.
  8. The Tigray Peace Forces subsequently claimed a town rendered as Milazat or Malazat, roughly twenty kilometers southeast of Mekelle, and a commander claimed near-full control of Tigray. The town’s spelling, its capture and associated social video remain unverified. Entering Mekelle does not retroactively validate those claims or establish control of the whole region.
  9. Banks and shops shut before the reported entry as residents anticipated fighting. The available dating does not securely identify which Friday those closures occurred. Senior TPLF leaders were also said to have left, but their destinations and full movements are unknown. Earlier descriptions of TPLF-held towns and an Eritrean border connection are historical, not a current map.
  10. The TPLF regained the region within about seven months of a federal takeover in 2020. A possible return to guerrilla tactics is therefore a military assessment, not an established announcement of its next operations. Losing a capital can change where a force governs without ending its ability to fight.
  11. At least fifty-two civilians were reported killed around Alamata during three days of heavy fighting in late September. That was part of our October 1 coverage, not a fresh death count after Mekelle changed hands. The exact three-day interval remains unsettled: accounts give September 26 through 28, or September 26 through 29 while still describing three days.
  12. Descriptions of artillery and explosive bombardment of residential neighborhoods included infants and mothers among the dead. Responsibility for individual deaths is not established. A publication timestamp on September 30 dates the account, not every death.
  13. A separate claim puts ninety-seven deaths along the wider Kobo–Kukuftu stretch of the Alamata front, including fifty-two in Alamata city. That account was dated October 1 and republished October 4. It is not independently corroborated, covers a broader area and cannot be treated as a replacement for the earlier minimum around Alamata. The overlap is unknown. Adding the figures would risk counting the same people twice.
  14. The marketplace deaths also remain unreconciled. Our earlier coverage carried twelve deaths in a marketplace strike. Another account describes eleven killed and fifteen wounded by artillery fire at Alamata’s Saturday market. Neither establishes whether these were the same attack, whether the market deaths were included in the fifty-two, or who fired. There is no basis to add those counts or choose one as a definitive correction.
  15. Later references to more than fifty deaths supply no established new overall toll. Tanks and armored vehicles were filmed passing through Alamata, and government-aligned forces claimed capture. Those images alone do not establish the vehicles’ operators or continuous control of the town. Mekelle’s reported recapture leaves both Alamata’s durable control and these civilian-death questions unresolved.
  16. More than seven hundred twenty war-wounded people had arrived at hospitals across southern and northwestern Tigray since September 22 in the earlier dated reporting. That is a regional arrivals figure, not more than seven hundred inpatient admissions in Alamata alone. Its components are already included in the aggregate and must not be counted again.
  17. Korem and Alamata hospitals combined received more than four hundred twenty patients, up from around one hundred eighty over a stated forty-eight-hour period within September 22 through 25. The precise start and end of those forty-eight hours, and separate hospital subtotals, are unavailable. More than three hundred wounded people arrived at Suhul Hospital in Shire, with no precise cutoff established.
  18. There is no civilian-versus-combatant breakdown, verified October 5 cumulative count or patient-outcome breakdown. Nor is there a quantified current update on staffing, beds, operations, supplies or referrals. Hospital visits for war wounds were described as increasing on October 4, but that does not turn the earlier totals into a current census.
  19. At least one hundred fifty thousand people were already estimated displaced in Afar in reporting published September 28. The same number appears in an October 4 account describing displacement and people moving farther south toward a destination rendered as “Afa.” Afar is the supported regional name in other displacement accounts, but the precise destination in that later account is unresolved.
  20. It is unknown whether the later number describes the same population, an updated estimate or new displacement from Tigray. These are not established independent counts and cannot be added. The figure is not a verified total of newly displaced Tigray residents. A communications blackout further limits knowledge of current conditions.
  21. Allegations of child conscription and air strikes on schools also remain unsubstantiated here. No verified recruiting party, recruitment count, struck-school identity or incident date is established. They are not disproved, but they cannot be presented as confirmed conduct by any side.
  22. A drone strike did hit Tigrai TV on September 27, interrupting its broadcasts; the station resumed from a temporary studio the next day. The attacker is not established. That broadcaster strike is not evidence of a school strike, just as reports of children killed do not establish child recruitment. It also does not explain every communications failure.
  23. Fighting spans Tigray, Amhara and Afar, not just the road to Mekelle. September 23 is the supported date for the larger clashes across those regions, and early October accounts continued to describe fighting between federal forces and a TPLF-linked opposition alliance. A separate assessment places lower-level violence near the Ethiopia–Sudan border on August 1. Those dates describe different scales of violence, not necessarily contradictory start dates.
  24. The alliance is described as seven groups in one account, and the TPLF plus seven other groups in another—implying eight participants. A verified membership list is unavailable, and the descriptions may concern different arrangements. Neither count can silently replace the other.
  25. The alliance’s exact announcement date is also unresolved. Descriptions of the escalation differ between “last week” and “the following week.” Neither establishes a precise date. Proposed corrections to the identities and affiliations of the people offering these assessments have not been securely verified.
  26. The federal government and the TPLF signed the Pretoria peace agreement on November 2, 2022, with November 3 recorded as its effective date. Its preamble dates the conflict’s eruption to November 3, 2020. The supported conflict-to-agreement chronology is November 2020 to November 2022—not 2020 to 2021, and not proof that all violence then ceased.
  27. A claim that the earlier war killed “at least six hundred thousand” people is not established here. Its origin, mortality categories, estimation method and uncertainty are unresolved, including whether that number can legitimately be called a minimum. It cannot be used as a verified death total.
  28. The Pretoria framework is now assessed as effectively dead because key commitments remained unfulfilled. That is an assessment of breakdown, not a verified formal termination or a complete finding of which party failed which obligation.
  29. Another assessment describes the agreement as a cessation-of-hostilities arrangement intended to lead to political negotiations, and says displaced people remained in poorly maintained camps without a full federal return. Those claims are not an audited camp inventory or proof that only one party failed its obligations.
  30. The available primary passages do not establish detailed clauses, deadlines and current compliance for later negotiations, displaced-person return, humanitarian access, disarmament or foreign-force withdrawal. The African Union has called for restraint, but a call for restraint is not scheduled talks. No verified negotiation date is available.
  31. Ethiopia ordered ten Eritrean diplomats to leave within forty-eight hours on October 1 and announced it would close its embassy in Asmara. Eritrea announced it was severing diplomatic relations in response. Those are established decisions, not confirmation that the diplomats departed on time or that embassy premises physically closed.
  32. The rupture removes formal diplomatic cooperation during active fighting without proving that Eritrean troops have joined it. Ethiopia accuses Eritrea, Egypt and Sudan of meddling; those governments deny the accusations. No independently corroborated foreign troop locations, identified units, arms transfers, financial backing or operational assistance are established in this account.
  33. Claims of reciprocal Ethiopian–Egyptian diplomat expulsions also lack independently established identities, dates and official reciprocal announcements. They cannot be treated as a confirmed additional escalation. Overnight blasts in Addis Ababa and opposition allegations of drone attacks do not establish their cause or connect them to Eritrea or the fighting around Mekelle.
  34. The alliance’s relationship with Eritrea and the extent of outside involvement remain disputed. Ethiopia’s pursuit of Red Sea access adds regional context, but separate conflicts have not necessarily merged. A wider proxy war is a risk, not a demonstrated description of the present battlefield. No coordinated diplomatic response or dated negotiation is established.
  35. The reported entry into Mekelle answers the earlier question of whether government-aligned forces would reach the capital. It does not establish a military settlement. The TPLF’s stated intention to keep fighting leaves lasting control unresolved, and there is no documented end to the war, reconciled current civilian toll, established civilian-flight reopening or verified safe return for people driven from their homes.
