  1. Mexico lifts every coastal warning while Hurricane Trudy keeps blowing at 100 miles an hour. Dangerous surf and rip currents threaten the Pacific shoreline for another two to three days. Port and beach restrictions have already disrupted shipping and recreation. The immediate question is how much danger remains as the hurricane moves away.
  2. Trudy’s center is about 180 miles west-northwest of Manzanillo and 105 miles southwest of Cabo Corrientes. The Category 2 hurricane remains offshore. Its center hasn’t made landfall, and the latest forecast takes it farther away from mainland Mexico.
  3. Trudy’s sustained winds have held at 100 miles an hour through Sunday’s position updates. Earlier, its center was about 100 miles southwest of Manzanillo, then 165 miles west. The latest fix puts it farther offshore. The storm strengthened to Category 2 on October 17. Sunday afternoon’s reading continues that intensity, with rapid weakening expected to begin overnight.
  4. Mexico has ended warnings for its coastline and the Islas Marías. That replaces the earlier hurricane warning from Manzanillo north to Cabo Corrientes. Local authorities still control beach access and navigation restrictions, through decisions separate from the coastal hurricane warnings.
  5. Hurricane-force winds reach up to 30 miles from Trudy’s center, compared with 35 miles earlier. Tropical-storm-force winds extend as far as 90 miles. The center is moving northwest at six miles an hour, down from ten. Central pressure is 974 millibars, down from 976. Forecast gusts reach 105 knots, above the sustained wind speed of 85 knots.
  6. Manzanillo’s port was closed to all navigation, and October 17 updates continued to describe the closure. Authorities also restricted beach access in Manzanillo, Tecomán and Armería, suspending recreational activities. Those orders affected people working on the water as well as beachgoers.
  7. Colima prepared six temporary shelters to receive people. The preparations were already in place on October 17 as authorities kept the port and beaches closed. For coastal communities, the hurricane’s retreat changes the weather outlook, while local restrictions determine when fishing, shipping and recreation can resume. Rain also remains a threat beyond the immediate shoreline.
  8. Earlier forecasts called for four to eight inches across Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco, locally about twelve. The latest forecast calls for one to four additional inches along and near Jalisco’s coast through Sunday night. These forecasts cover different areas and periods.
  9. Flooding, fallen trees and stranded vehicles have already disrupted Colima. Those effects were reported across the group of communities comprising Colima city, Villa de Álvarez and Manzanillo by Sunday morning. Heavy rain and gusty winds affected parts of southwestern and west-central Mexico. The additional rain could bring localized flash flooding and mudslides, especially on steep terrain.
  10. National civil protection officials reported no deaths or injuries through midday October 18 in Guerrero, Michoacán, Jalisco and Colima. That preliminary assessment covers those four states and that reporting window. The flooding and other disruption in Colima had already been reported.
  11. Dangerous water can outlast the hurricane’s closest approach. Gusts reaching tropical-storm strength were still possible along parts of west-central Mexico’s coast and the Islas Marías during Sunday afternoon and evening. Storm-surge flooding was expected to subside during the afternoon and night. Large swells, however, were forecast to keep reaching the coast well beyond that period.
  12. Trudy’s swells are expected to affect southwestern and west-central Mexico for another two to three days. They can produce life-threatening surf and rip currents. The center’s movement offshore still leaves people along the shoreline exposed to dangerous conditions in the sea.
  13. Four-meter seas extended far beyond the hurricane’s strongest winds, reaching 150 nautical miles from the center in the northwest quadrant. An earlier warning described waves potentially reaching six meters. That was a forecast hazard. Offshore, the storm’s next major change should be a sharp loss of strength, with the latest forecast setting out a step-by-step decline.
  14. Trudy’s observed winds are 100 miles an hour. Monday’s forecast drops them to 90, then 75. Tuesday brings 60, then 45, below hurricane strength. Wednesday’s forecast falls to 35, then 25. Every value after the starting point is a forecast.
  15. Trudy’s projected route passes south of Baja California Sur on Monday and Tuesday. Forecasters expect a remnant low by early Wednesday, October 21, and dissipation by October 22. Both could happen sooner. Overnight rain and the continuing swells remain immediate coastal hazards. Local authorities haven’t announced when Manzanillo’s port and the affected beaches can reopen.
