HeyDay News

- Six hospitalized tourists are stable and in non-critical condition. That's Friday morning's update after the pedal-tavern crash. On October 23, we reported one patient in critical condition. Police now put hospital transports at ten. What accountability will follow the video review?
- The improved outlook extends beyond those six patients. Police said everyone taken to a hospital was expected to survive. Our earlier report described nine injured passengers, including at least two with serious injuries. Those injuries can still be serious even when doctors no longer consider them life-threatening.
- A westbound Toyota RAV4 struck the pedal tavern from behind on Demonbreun Street in the Gulch. Police narrowed the location to near 1033 Demonbreun Street. The collision site is also described as the Demonbreun Street bridge.
- The approximate crash time was eight-thirty at night. The later timing places it on Thursday, October 22, although the earlier date given was Wednesday. The exact date still isn't settled. Both the SUV driver and the pedal-tavern operator were unhurt.
- Police revised the number aboard from twelve to thirteen. They haven't explained why that count changed, or whether it includes the operator. The tourists were between forty and sixty-seven years old and came from Illinois, Missouri, Louisiana and India.
- That supplies details the first update couldn't give about the group. The treatment picture is clearer, too. Ten people were taken to hospitals, and the receiving hospitals are now named. Six of those ten remained at Vanderbilt early Friday. That remains a Friday-morning snapshot of their condition.
- The receiving hospitals included Saint Thomas Midtown, TriStar Centennial, TriStar Skyline and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. That answers where people beyond the first six Vanderbilt patients were treated. The number sent to each hospital hasn't been released.
- The hospital transport total rose from nine to ten after police corrected their first count. The revised figure tells us how many people went for hospital care. It doesn't tell us how many ultimately received an injury diagnosis.
- The SUV driver told investigators his radio distracted him before the impact. That gives a more specific explanation than his earlier statement that he was distracted. Police described him as cooperative and said he showed no signs of impairment. Investigators planned to examine video recorded aboard the pedal tavern.
- The pedal-tavern owners say police cited the driver. Police haven't confirmed that claim or named an offense. Investigators said they would consult the district attorney about appropriate charges after reviewing the video. A charging decision hasn't been announced.
- Owners Angie Gleason, Brian Gleason and Pete Kootsikas said they're fully cooperating. They expressed concern for their guests, their team member and the families. They also said safety has been central to their business for sixteen years, during which they've served hundreds of thousands of guests.
- Nashville's existing pedal-tavern rules cover fees, operating hours and travel boundaries. They don't require seatbelts or other equipment to keep riders from falling off. That leaves a safety question for the city as it evaluates whether its requirements should change.
- No one has explained how each passenger was injured, so the role any particular protective device might have played is unclear. The city's broader discussion also reaches street design and access. Mayor Freddie O'Connell described a state-law restriction on blocking streets inside tourism development zones.
- O'Connell said the city reviews pedal taverns and limits how many may operate. Councilmember Jacob Kupin promised an evaluation of whether safety measures need to change. He described crashes like this as uncommon, while committing to examine possible protections.
- The tourism-zone law limits local governments' ability to block streets within those zones. Nobody has clarified whether that restriction applies at this crash location. It can't yet explain why a particular safety measure was or wasn't used here.
- A legislative panel's negative recommendation didn't cancel the law or the emergency rules for the downtown tourism district. Those rules were scheduled to remain effective through January 27, 2027. The city hasn't announced a new crash-specific safety requirement.
- The immediate medical outlook improved in Friday's update. The driver's explanation now identifies his radio. Accountability still depends on what investigators find in the pedal-tavern video and what follows their planned consultation with the district attorney. No date for that review has been announced.
