  1. Navi Pillay has won the Nobel Peace Prize.
  2. The committee is honoring her role in bringing atrocity crimes before international courts. It says judges and those institutions face political attack. At 85, Pillay says she's still hearing a genocide case against Myanmar whose outcome remains unresolved.
  3. Pillay receives the entire 2026 prize. The committee announced its decision on October 9, with the formal citation, “for her efforts to promote peace and international law.” It credits her with helping advance prosecutions for the gravest international crimes.
  4. Those crimes include war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The committee describes a jurist who helped build a more comprehensive global legal order. Its emphasis is on institutions that can examine evidence and hold people responsible for mass violence.
  5. Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes says international law and its institutions face tremendous pressure and attack. The committee argues that resolving conflicts without force depends on the rule of law, while wars increase and judges face political attacks.
  6. Pillay's career began under apartheid, South Africa's system of racial exclusion. In 1967, she became the first woman to start a law practice in Natal Province. She later became the first black woman to serve on South Africa's High Court.
  7. Pillay defended opponents of apartheid before taking her work into international justice. At the Rwanda tribunal, she joined a bench that delivered the first international-court judgment for genocide. That decision also became central to the Nobel committee's account of her influence.
  8. Jean-Paul Akayesu was convicted on nine of fifteen counts on September 2, 1998. Laïty Kama presided, with Lennart Aspegren and Pillay alongside him. Pillay's contribution belongs within that three-judge decision.
  9. The Nobel committee credits her influence in recognizing that rape and sexual violence could constitute crimes against humanity and genocide. For victims, that recognition brings sexual violence into the legal account of the atrocity itself. The committee highlights the possibility of prosecuting it within those crimes.
  10. Pillay presided over the Media Case judgment on December 3, 2003. Ferdinand Nahimana founded the broadcaster RTLM. Jean-Bosco Barayagwiza held a senior role there, and Hassan Ngeze edited Kangura. Their trial brought media leaders before the tribunal.
  11. Barayagwiza was also a founding member of the CDR political organization. Pillay sat with judges Erik Møse and Asoka de Zoysa Gunawardana. The tribunal announced convictions for genocide, incitement to genocide, conspiracy and crimes against humanity.
  12. The committee highlights a first prosecution for incitement to genocide through the spreading of propaganda. The Media Case later reached appeal, with a judgment on November 28, 2007. The convictions described here are the trial court's December 2003 findings.
  13. Pillay then served at the International Criminal Court. She was elected on February 7, 2003, for a six-year term, beginning March 11. Her next major role put her in charge of the United Nations human-rights office.
  14. The General Assembly appointed Pillay on July 28, 2008. She took office on September 1 and served until 2014. That role extended her work from judging criminal cases to leading the UN's human-rights office.
  15. Pillay's later work included chairing a UN commission investigating the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel. That commission examined conduct in Gaza under the Genocide Convention, the international agreement concerned with preventing and punishing genocide.
  16. Her legal career reaches from South Africa to Rwanda, and into investigations concerning Gaza. Her continuing judicial work concerns Myanmar. These places connect different roles, from national legal practice to criminal trials, a UN investigation and a case before the International Court of Justice.
  17. The commission concluded on September 16, 2025, that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Its accompanying announcement described the conduct as continuing. That conclusion belongs to the commission Pillay chaired. The Nobel committee honored her wider career in international law.
  18. Pillay said she was stepping down from the commission in an interview published October 30, 2025. Her continuing court work concerns The Gambia's case against Myanmar over alleged genocide against the Rohingya. She describes her role as an ad hoc judge, serving in that particular case.
  19. Pillay was selected from a field of 287 nominated candidates, including 208 individuals and 79 organizations. The 2026 prize also marks 125 years since the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
  20. The cash award is reportedly 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately 1.2 million US dollars. A separate figure puts it at nine million kronor, and the official amount hasn't been confirmed. The larger amount was described as a one-million-kronor increase, or nine percent.
  21. A ceremony listing gives December 10 in Oslo, but the organizers haven't confirmed the date and venue. Pillay's work continues in the meantime. The Myanmar case had hearings on January 12, 26 and 29 this year, with eleven states intervening.
  22. The Myanmar allegations remain before the court. Pillay says she continues serving as a case-specific judge and intends to keep supporting the Nuremberg Principles, the principles behind international accountability for grave crimes.
