- A school bus hit a railway bridge and lost its roof.
- Three children were taken to hospital. Police said their injuries weren't thought to be life-threatening. The bus was carrying pupils from two schools, and investigators still have to explain how it came to strike the bridge.
- The collision happened on Tuesday, October twentieth, twenty twenty-six. Gwent Police received the call at about a quarter to eight that morning, as children were travelling to school.
- The bus struck Maindee West railway bridge on Tregare Street in Newport. The bridge carries the railway towards Cwmbran. The consequences reached beyond the road, with train delays and cancellations in both directions between Newport and Hereford.
- Pupils aboard attended St Julian's School on Heather Road and Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed, the Welsh-medium secondary school on Duffryn Way. The impact tore away the roof and bent the rear of the upper floor back on itself.
- Thirteen-year-old Gruff was among those taken to hospital. His mother, Jo Townsend, from Maindy in Newport, said he'd been sitting at the back of the upper deck when the bus struck the bridge.
- Townsend said her son called her in shock, struggling to get his words out. He described darkness, flickering lights, screaming and metal scraping against metal. She said a pole struck his head, and that he was being treated for bumps and scratches, including marks on his back.
- Townsend said she went under the police tape to reach Gruff. She described sending him off to school expecting everything to be okay, then facing something she'd never expected to happen.
- Paramedics treated injured children at a nearby nursery. Lullabyz moved its own children elsewhere so the premises could be used for treatment. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service attended alongside police. Newport council thanked the nursery for making space available.
- Police logged the collision early in the school morning, and rail disruption followed. Recovery crews collected the detached roof first, then removed the bus by midday. National Rail later marked its disruption record cleared.
- Tregare Street closed and traffic followed diversions before the road reopened. On the railway, trains couldn't cross the bridge while an inspection was awaited. Although the bridge appeared to have no visible damage, that appearance couldn't tell passengers whether engineers considered it safe.
- Rush-hour passengers at Newport station faced delays and cancellations through most of Tuesday morning. The cleared rail incident record marks the end of that disruption notice. It doesn't give the inspection findings or say whether operating restrictions remained.
- Newport Transport said it was carrying out a full investigation and cooperating with the relevant authorities. The operator said it takes safety extremely seriously and wished those affected a swift recovery. Police were also continuing their investigation into the collision.
- Rhun ap Iorwerth thanked emergency services and everyone supporting the children during First Minister's Questions. He expressed concern for those injured and for others left distressed by what had happened.
- Newport council said it would continue support through the schools and fully support the formal investigation. It made the well-being of those involved its priority. Investigators haven't yet explained why the bus approached the bridge or what changes will be needed to prevent another collision.
