- Children left their belongings behind when they evacuated their school. Bomb threats disrupted hundreds of schools across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Hungary and Serbia, forcing some buildings to empty. Police treated messages as hoaxes, and completed searches in Hungary and parts of Serbia found no bombs. Who sent the threats, and do the incidents share a source?
- Lambeg children left school, Edinburgh staff went home, and a German examination stopped in Tatabánya. Pupils were also sent home around Kraljevo. Those disruptions happened on Monday, October nineteenth, but the response differed from place to place.
- Up to 300 Northern Ireland schools reported receiving the same emailed threat. Police described its wording as generalised. Some schools elsewhere in the United Kingdom received that message too. Schools made different decisions about whether to empty their buildings.
- St Colman’s Primary School in Lambeg, County Antrim, was evacuated. Pupils and staff left the building, and children went immediately, leaving belongings behind. The principal called the emailed threat “a very serious concern.”
- The principal described a site with 400 children and 80 staff. Those figures describe the school’s population. Evacuations also happened in west Tyrone and Derry, while schools in Strabane received emails. Some County Derry schools kept operating normally.
- Northern Ireland’s Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson assessed the risk to the public as “low.” Police were investigating the emails, while the Education Authority condemned the disruption and also described the messages as hoaxes following police enquiries.
- Police said they were “treating the matter as a hoax.” Across Northern Ireland, receiving the email led to different school responses. The broad police assessment didn't give families an individual search result for each building.
- Several Edinburgh schools were evacuated, and staff attending an in-service day were sent home. That was a staff-training day, so an evacuated school building didn't necessarily contain classrooms full of pupils. Police Scotland treated the messages as a hoax.
- Schools in East Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire also received messages. Specialist cybercrime officers investigated where the threats came from. The Scottish response was a separate investigation from the one in Northern Ireland.
- Police Scotland received more than 300 calls about the threats. That's a measure of calls. Northern Ireland’s separate figure of up to 300 measures schools reporting an email. The two figures describe different parts of the disruption.
- More than 70 educational institutions were affected in Hungary. Emails sent to media outlets claimed explosives had been planted at those institutions. Police searched schools and found no bombs. The National Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation into a terrorist threat.
- That investigation examines the threat itself. The searches found no evidence of planted explosives. The way the emails reached the public also differed from Northern Ireland, where schools reported receiving the same message directly.
- Interior Minister Pósfai Gábor described the morning’s threats as “unfounded” after police examinations. In Tatabánya, officers searched two school buildings with an explosives-detection dog. Both searches found no bomb.
- Árpád Gimnázium was one of the two schools searched in Tatabánya. A German school-leaving examination in the town had to stop. Some children waited in police minibuses. Police also took action in Tata and Esztergom.
- Several Belgrade schools were evacuated in Serbia. Two schools receiving threats were Branko Radičević primary in Batajnica and Đura Daničić in the Braće Jerković neighbourhood of Voždovac. Evacuations also affected Novi Sad and South Bačka District.
- In the Kraljevo police jurisdiction, 21 schools received threats. Eighteen were in Kraljevo and three in Vrnjačka Banja. Pupils were sent home while police searched. Around Čačak, 20 schools were evacuated, and around Subotica, 27 were evacuated.
- The Kraljevo jurisdiction’s 21 schools include both town figures within that total. The 20 around Čačak and 27 around Subotica describe evacuations. Serbia’s regional figures give only part of the national picture, with different measures in different places.
- Evacuations also affected schools in Prijepolje, Priboj, Nova Varoš, Niš and Leskovac. Schools in Bačka Palanka received threats too. Interior Ministry personnel checked buildings after pupils and staff had evacuated.
- Leskovac police confirmed searches at 30 schools across Jablanica District, including 28 primary and two secondary schools. Officers found no explosive devices in those buildings. Threats affecting seven schools across Niš and Aleksinac were also found to be false.
- The sender’s identity and any connection across the four jurisdictions remain unknown. Families also still need building-by-building clearance and return information. Edinburgh staff and pupils around Kraljevo were sent home. For many other affected schools, it isn't clear whether everyone had returned, even after searches found no bombs.
