- Millions of basketwork eels gather to spawn beside a single underwater mountain.
- Researchers estimate the gathering holds about 2.8 million eels. But the species is globally listed as vulnerable to extinction, even with so many animals concentrated in one place.
- What can this enormous breeding gathering tell us about the species' future?
- Patience Seamount lies in Huon Marine Park, south of Tasmania. The eels gather about 1,000 metres below the surface, across reported dimensions of roughly two by three kilometres. That describes an extensive gathering spread through deep water.
- A seamount is a mountain rising from the seabed. At Patience, researchers have a known breeding site where they can return and measure change. The new work gives that monitoring a numerical starting point.
- About 2.8 million is an estimate built from surveys, rather than a count of every individual fish. Its immediate value is a baseline. Future measurements can be compared with it to track changes at this breeding gathering.
- CSIRO led the research, using surveys conducted from 2023 through 2025. Studying fish at this depth means combining different observations. Sound can survey animals through the water, while a towed camera supplies images from below.
- The team combined hydroacoustic observations, which use sound, with deep-towed-camera data. The dataset includes raw acoustic readings and processed measurements of returning echoes. Together, those observations support an estimate of how many eels occupy the gathering.
- Repeating the surveys across three years gives researchers measurements to compare over time. To learn whether numbers are increasing or falling, they'll need to keep making those comparisons. A large gathering on its own doesn't tell them the direction of change.
- The eels gather annually and stay for months. Researchers describe Patience as the only known spawning aggregation of purely oceanic deep-sea eels. That makes this a rare opportunity to study their breeding life in one identifiable place.
- The size of the gathering also has another measure: its total weight. And the published figures for that measure disagree sharply.
- Estimates of the gathering's total weight run from 3.5 tonnes to more than 3,500 tonnes in May. That's a difference of more than a thousandfold. The total weight remains uncertain, so neither figure can be treated as settled.
- The conservation picture reaches beyond this one seamount. Basketwork eels belong to a globally vulnerable species, and a concentration of millions at a breeding site represents only one part of that species' story.
- A reported decline of 85 per cent over 40 years concerns a particular continental slope in New Zealand. It's a local warning. Researchers monitoring Patience need repeated measurements of this gathering to understand how its own numbers change.
- Basketwork eels are also caught as bycatch, meaning they're taken while fishing crews target another species. Here, that fishing connection is orange roughy. The survey dataset includes gatherings dominated by both orange roughy and basketwork eels.
- Parks Australia says a management plan introduced in 2025 protects Patience Seamount from bottom trawling. That gives this breeding habitat a specific protection. Future eel surveys can track numbers there as management continues.
- Researchers still don't know where the arriving eels come from or what happens to their offspring. The estimate provides a starting point for measuring change at their known breeding gathering. Whether protection at this one seamount is enough to sustain them will take further research.
