- On October 1, we reported two Tsawwassen elders killed. Now a third pedestrian has died. The fourth person struck has left hospital and is recovering at home. Investigators still have to determine why the pickup struck the pedestrians.
- A pickup struck four people in the Tsawwassen Mills parking lot in British Columbia. It happened shortly after ten twenty-five in the morning on September 30, during an Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation gathering.
- The two Tsawwassen First Nation elders who died at the scene were Virginia Splockton and wilapiya, also known as Barb Joe. The collision ended the Nation's gathering early, turning a community occasion into mourning.
- Three of those four pedestrians have now died. Both people taken to hospital were initially critically injured and airlifted for treatment. One later died from her injuries, while the other continues recovering at home.
- Police identify the third victim as Gwenyth Brigit Dwyn, a 64-year-old woman from South Delta. Her family obituary spells her middle name Brigid and identifies her as née Gwen Klassen. The two middle-name spellings haven't been reconciled.
- Dwyn died at Royal Columbian Hospital on October 7, a week after the collision and eight days before her sixty-fifth birthday. Police announced her death on October 14. Her death brings another bereaved family into a collision that had already killed two elders.
- Tsawwassen First Nation initially said the driver suffered a medical incident while driving. Police are still examining that possibility and haven't confirmed it as the cause.
- Police are investigating whether the driver experienced a medical event before the collisions. They also say the evidence they've reviewed so far hasn't shown that the collision was targeted or ideologically motivated. Investigators haven't reached a final conclusion about what caused it.
- Investigators have examined the pickup's movements before it struck the pedestrians, including an earlier collision on the same property. They've completed extensive scene and collision analysis. They're still reviewing witness information, cellphone footage and other video from multiple sources.
- Police continue communicating with the affected families and Tsawwassen First Nation. The investigation remains open, and there's no announced date for another investigative update or a court event.
- No charges had been sworn as of October 14. Whether anyone will face criminal charges still depends on the evidence. Police say potential charges would go to Crown Counsel, the prosecutors, for assessment if investigators find evidence of a crime.
