  1. A magnitude six earthquake struck offshore northwest of Vanuatu. Models place an estimated 2,000 people in an area of light shaking. Whether communities suffered injuries, damaged buildings or disrupted services still needs a local assessment.
  2. The reviewed magnitude is six point zero, and the earthquake began ten kilometres beneath the seabed. It struck late Sunday, November first, at about ten forty-seven at night local time.
  3. The epicenter was 165 kilometres northwest of Port-Olry, out at sea. Port-Olry sits on Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu's largest island. The distance describes the offshore earthquake's position relative to the town.
  4. People on different islands can experience different shaking from the same earthquake. Magnitude measures the earthquake itself. Intensity describes the shaking at a particular location, which can vary from one community to another.
  5. An estimated 2,000 people were within the modeled zone of intensity four, meaning light shaking. The humanitarian impact projection is low, and the PAGER impact alert is green, indicating a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
  6. That exposure figure counts people potentially within a shaking zone. It doesn't count injuries or people forced from their homes. The humanitarian projection weighs the earthquake's magnitude, the affected population and how vulnerable that population is.
  7. PAGER estimates how many people experienced different levels of shaking, then estimates likely fatalities and economic losses. It updates those calculations as more information arrives. Uncertainty is greatest in the early minutes and hours.
  8. The first humanitarian assessment appeared about fifteen minutes after the earthquake. Its origin time was rounded to the nearest minute, consistent with the more precise earthquake timing.
  9. PAGER's loss estimates leave out secondary effects, including landslides, liquefaction and tsunami. A green impact alert therefore can't settle the separate question of tsunami risk.
  10. The earthquake listing carries no tsunami flag. No tsunami alert has been reported for this event, but an event-specific official coastal all-clear still needs confirmation.
  11. Vanuatu has more than eighty islands and lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of frequent earthquake and volcanic activity. Its recent earthquakes have had very different consequences.
  12. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake in December 2024 killed more than a dozen people and injured about 200, badly damaging Port Vila. A week before this latest quake, offshore earthquakes of magnitude 6.9 and 6.3 prompted a tsunami alert.
  13. That earlier alert concerned potentially dangerous waves along coasts within 300 kilometres of those earthquakes' epicenter.
  14. For this magnitude six earthquake, the early models point to limited impact. Local assessments still need to determine whether buildings or services were affected. No confirmed death, injury or material-damage figures are available.
