  1. Wichita has reopened the sports complex where a pickup killed a child and a man. Ten people suffered traumatic injuries, including five children, and the city is promising temporary barriers. Earlier on October 19, we reported the emergency response and two deaths as police investigated. What protections will families return to while investigators work out why the pickup entered the field?
  2. Stryker Sports Complex reopened at three p.m. Monday, two days after the crash. The city had canceled events until further notice. That closure has ended, though reopening doesn't mean every scheduled program has resumed.
  3. Six-year-old Cole Adrian and thirty-five-year-old Nicholas Schafer died at the scene. Both lived in McPherson, and they weren't related. The crash happened at the sports complex in northeast Wichita, near North Greenwich Road and East Twenty-ninth Street.
  4. The pickup entered the field during a youth soccer game on Saturday, October 17. The October 18 date is incorrect. October 18 was Sunday.
  5. Public Works and Utilities was to begin installing temporary barriers Monday at key locations around the complex. Wichita police are conducting an initial security assessment with that department, Parks and Recreation, and Stryker management. The barriers are intended to stay until the city can put permanent solutions in place.
  6. The city hasn't announced that installation is finished. It also hasn't released the security assessment's findings or set a deadline for permanent changes. Families are returning while that safety work is still taking shape.
  7. The city also promised a police presence at the facility the following weekend, with local mental-health professionals available to help families. Before the crash, the Chevrolet pickup had been parked at the complex. It then moved onto a field and struck people.
  8. Police took the thirty-four-year-old Garden City woman into custody, then released her without charges pending toxicology testing and a mechanical examination. Investigators haven't released the results or determined whether the truck's movement was accidental or intentional.
  9. Two of her children were inside the pickup. Another was playing soccer on a different field. Investigators interviewed the driver and more than thirty witnesses, including the two children riding with her. Police consulted the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office before releasing her, and sought public photographs and video.
  10. Ten people suffered traumatic injuries, and eleven went to hospitals. The extra patient was a sixty-one-year-old woman with non-traumatic medical complications. Some counts still call all eleven injured. The two people who died at the scene are counted separately.
  11. The injured included five children and five adults, ranging from five to sixty-eight years old. They were taken to Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Medical Center. Police described injuries as not life-threatening, while other descriptions included serious and noncritical. Those terms don't mean minor injuries. No new individual recovery updates have been announced.
  12. Responders declared a Level Three mass-casualty emergency. One early call counted at least eleven patients, including two in serious medical emergencies. Another counted nine while people were still being assessed. Those changing dispatch counts reflected triage as the response unfolded. The final death toll is two.
  13. A five-year-old with injuries across several body systems scored fifteen on the Glasgow Coma Scale, fully responsive at that assessment. That doesn't predict recovery. Later, a responder said, “There's another victim in the middle of the field.” The call's timing doesn't tell us when that person was found or add another casualty.
  14. McPherson Mayor Jim Loving pledged continuing support to the bereaved families and wished the injured a recovery. He also thanked bystanders who stepped in before the first ambulance arrived, along with the first responders in Wichita and McPherson.
  15. Kansas's high school activities association suspended championship play after the crash. The third-place and championship flag football games still need confirmed arrangements, despite the complex reopening.
  16. Wednesday, October 21, at Shawnee Mission South is a possible option for the two postponed games. That plan is tentative. A confirmed replacement date, kickoff time and venue haven't been announced.
  17. The Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office will conduct an initial review of the crash. No date has been announced for a charging decision.
