- A car crossed the center line and hit a school bus carrying 37 students.
- Two people are dead: a 10th-grade girl riding to Winter Haven High School, and the driver of a Jeep the bus struck head-on. Nobody has been arrested.
- Why did the car cross the line, and will its driver face charges?
- It was still dark, about 6:13 a.m., when Polk County bus 1819 headed east toward Winter Haven High School. Preliminary review of the bus video shows it in its own lane. A white Chevrolet Malibu heading west crossed the center line, for reasons not yet known, and struck the bus near its rear wheels. The impact ripped a tire off. The bus lost control and veered into the westbound lane, where it hit a silver Jeep head-on, then flipped onto its roof in a ditch. The Jeep caught fire, and its driver died at the scene. The bus did not burn. The girl on the bus died at the scene too. Neither victim has been named.
- The crash happened on Lucerne Park Road, State Road 544, about a mile and a half west of U.S. 27, near a Walmart distribution center northeast of Winter Haven. More than 100 first responders worked the scene, and the road stayed closed in both directions until about 2 p.m.
- Thirty-nine people were aboard: 37 students, the driver, and her 9-year-old daughter. The students left the scene four ways. Twenty-two rode to a hospital on another school bus with a paramedic. Seven went by ambulance. Three were airlifted. Four were taken by their families. The driver and her daughter went by ambulance. Those student figures add up to 36, the 37 students minus the girl who died. That is arithmetic, not an official count.
- By evening, most of the injured had been treated and released. Early in the day, five to seven trauma alerts were issued, with one person critical. Patients went to AdventHealth Heart of Florida, Lakeland Regional Health, Winter Haven Hospital and Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital, and one hospital had discharged 10 young patients to their parents by midday. One adult from another vehicle went by ambulance, and two other people got themselves to hospital. A woman on her way to work stopped and helped injured students at the scene.
- But no total for serious injuries has been published, and nobody has released a current condition for anyone still hospitalized.
- The county's sheriff called it the most horrific bus tragedy in decades, as far back as he can remember. The school superintendent credited evacuation drills with limiting the harm. He said families had been contacted and district staff were at the hospitals reuniting students with parents. Winter Haven High stayed open.
- The Malibu's driver was on the way to work and is cooperating with traffic homicide investigators. There has been no arrest and no charge. Nothing in the reporting says whether impairment, a medical emergency, distraction or something else played a part. The bus video and 911 calls were not released Monday.
- Accounts differ on one detail: whether the car hit the bus's rear wheels, or hit its side and tore the rear wheels off. They probably describe the same impact, and final findings will settle it. Accounts also differ on how many other vehicles were involved, two or three, though at least one more was. And an early report placed the crash near Orlando. It happened in Polk County.
- So the question stands. No one has said why the car crossed the line, and no charges have been announced. Federal involvement is unconfirmed: a National Transportation Safety Board investigation has been reported, but the sheriff's office has not listed it. The victims' names, any charging decision, the video, and the full injury count are all still to come. The sheriff's office has scheduled its next briefing for 11 a.m. Tuesday at its operations center in Winter Haven.
