DRC Ebola Surpasses 4,000 Cases as Virus Spreads to Five Provinces
Congo's Bundibugyo-strain outbreak hit 4,053 cases and 1,850 deaths, with WHO warning it is outrunning containment and a riverboat scare bringing the threat toward Kinshasa.

4,053. That is the confirmed count that turned an eastern Congolese emergency into a historic one: 4,053 Ebola cases across 53 health zones in five provinces as of August 5, 2026, with 1,850 deaths. 4 11 Put another way, nearly one in two confirmed patients has died, a case fatality rate of about 45.7%, and the counter is still moving by the dozen every day. 4 11
Scale is what makes this outbreak different. It is now described as the world's second-largest Ebola epidemic and the fastest-spreading on record. 2 9 The official declaration came on May 15, 2026, but the virus was already ahead of the paperwork. 9 Health officials and aid workers say Ebola was likely circulating for months before Ituri became the named epicenter, with a possible index case reaching back to February. 3 9
That head start explains the geography. Ituri remains the primary epicenter, accounting for 86.9% of cumulative cases, but the outbreak is no longer an Ituri outbreak. 4 The two newest affected zones are Gombari in Haut-Uele and Bafwasende in Tshopo, completing a five-province footprint that has steadily widened since May. 4 French broadcaster RFI likewise reported five provinces affected and growing concern about the virus reaching the capital. 6
Five Provinces And One Epicenter
The confirmed tally almost certainly understates the fire. The World Health Organization estimates true infections are three to four times higher, potentially 11,500 to 15,300, with 55 to 60% of cases unidentified. 9 Forbes, citing WHO modeling, reported that Congo is counting fewer than half its Ebola cases, a gap that means contact tracing, isolation and vaccination are chasing a much larger epidemic than the official curve shows. 9
is spreading faster than efforts to fight it
That was the warning on Wednesday, August 5, from WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who said the outbreak is spreading faster than efforts to fight it. 7 6 Al Jazeera reported that WHO also urged an Ervebo vaccine trial as part of a massively scaled response. 2 The logic is blunt: if more than half of infections are missed, beds, teams and vaccines sized to 4,000 cases will always be too small.
Part of the miss was biological and diagnostic. Heather Kerr of the International Rescue Committee, based in Bunia in Ituri, told France 24 that early testing targeted the Zaire strain when this outbreak is the Bundibugyo strain, delaying recognition. 3 Ebola has very similar symptoms to malaria, she noted, so in a malaria-endemic east the wrong test plus the wrong strain meant fevers that should have raised alarms were first read as something else. 3
Kerr described the present pace in stark terms, saying responders were seeing nearly 100 cases nearly every day. 3 France 24 reporting also warned that Ebola treatment centers are filling and that suspect cases needing isolation are putting the system in danger of running out of beds. 3 That is the arithmetic of a fast-moving filovirus: roughly 100 new confirmations a day will overwhelm any fixed number of isolation beds within weeks unless new capacity opens just as fast.
A Riverboat Tests The Capital
On August 6, 2026, Congolese authorities intercepted a riverboat near Kinshasa and screened more than 300 passengers after a passenger who had disembarked upstream died of suspected Ebola. 10 The episode turned an abstract fear — river traffic carrying the virus to a megacity of more than 20 million — into a concrete drill in screening, tracing and sanitary control on the Congo River corridor.
The river scare landed on top of other strain. About 1,700 people were already dead as of early August, before the count climbed to 1,850 within days. 8 4 11 Meanwhile frontline health workers in Ituri have gone on strike over pay, worsening healthcare access at exactly the moment access matters most. 7 A strike does not just close wards; it breaks the chain of triage, safe burials, sample transport and community trust that Ebola control depends on.
What the facts add up to is not a mystery but a mismatch. A Bundibugyo-strain virus that looks like malaria, missed for months, met a surveillance system built for a different strain and then outran it across five provinces. 3 4 9 The response is now being asked to do three hard things at once: find the uncounted half of the epidemic, staff and pay the workers who find them, and keep a river-and-road network from delivering the virus to Kinshasa. 9 7 10
