Congo Opens Biggest Ebola Centre as Record Outbreak Nears 4,000 Cases

More than 1,700 dead and nearly 4,000 cases have made this Congo's largest Ebola outbreak — and Bunia's 100-bed centre its largest response.

More than 1,700 people have died 11. That is the number that matters most in the Democratic Republic of Congo this week, and everything else being built, promised and warned about has to be measured against it. The dead are concentrated in the east, the toll is still rising, and the response now unfolding in Bunia is an attempt to catch a crisis that has already outrun the normal machinery of containment.

By early August, confirmed cases were nearing 4,000 10 and were described as on track to surpass 4,000 cases within the week 8. The outbreak had been officially declared in May 8 and has been described as the fastest spreading on record since it was officially declared in May 8. It is the largest-ever Ebola outbreak in the DRC 24, and the world's second-largest epidemic after the 2014-16 West Africa outbreak 8.

Those two designations together explain the urgency in Kinshasa and Geneva. Largest in national history means every Congolese precedent has been exceeded. Second-largest in world history means only one outbreak, the West African epidemic that reshaped global health emergency rules, stands above it in scale 8. For a country that has fought repeated Ebola wars since the virus was first identified on its territory, the fact that this one has moved past them all marks a break, not a repetition.

Bunia Becomes The Center

The physical answer, at least for now, is in Bunia, Ituri Province, in the northeast of the country 45. There, during the week of 3-5 August 2026, the country opened or prepared to open its largest-ever Ebola treatment centre, the 100-bed Rwankole Ebola Treatment Centre 3456. The name Rwankole appears only in one account of the opening 5, but the size, place and timing are consistent across multiple reports from that week 3456.

The facility has 100 beds total and is staffed by around 300 health workers 45. On 3 August, UN News reported new UN-backed centres opening at the heart of the record outbreak 2, and through 4-6 August, Africanews, DW, Reuters and RFI all reported the Bunia centre opening or set to open that week, with the World Health Organization chief in the country 371011.

One hundred beds and 300 staff would be a major deployment in any previous Congolese outbreak. Against nearly 4,000 confirmed cases as of 6 August 10, it reads instead as a first foothold. The sources do not give an internal breakdown of how many beds are reserved for confirmed patients versus suspected cases, so no arithmetic about coverage can be drawn from the reporting file. What can be said is that the centre was conceived as the largest the country has ever built, and that it arrived in the same days that case counts were pushing toward a new thousand-mark 810.

we must urgently and massively scale up all our efforts

That warning came from WHO Director-General Tedros during a visit to Kinshasa as the outbreak accelerated 710. He also warned that the outbreak is "spreading faster than our scale-up of the response" 7. On 1 August, WHO had warned that the crisis is "accelerating with alarming speed" 5. Tedros visited Kinshasa and warned that new cases were doubling in some hotspots in the past week alone 710.

The geography sharpens the warning. Five provinces are known to be affected, and authorities in Kinshasa fear the virus reaching the capital 10. That fear matters because Kinshasa is far from Ituri, dense, highly mobile and politically central. An outbreak that has so far killed more than 1,700 people in the east 11 would present an entirely different containment problem if transmission chains established themselves in a megacity.

Doubling in some hotspots in the past week alone 710 is the kind of detail epidemiologists use to distinguish a bad outbreak from a runaway one. It means the curve is not flattening while beds are being added. It also gives context to Tedros's second assessment, that the response is being outpaced 7. The Bunia opening is therefore best understood not as a solution arriving, but as a scale-up beginning after the virus has already taken the lead.

There are limits to what the current reporting establishes, and they should be stated plainly. No provided source names the virus strain or discusses vaccine or treatment availability. That means central questions about tools — what protects health workers, what can be offered beyond supportive care, whether prior vaccines apply — cannot be answered from this file. No source gives the internal bed breakdown between confirmed and suspected patients. No DRC health minister or Bunia official quotes appear in the provided excerpts beyond Tedros. And whether the centre was full on opening day, a natural question when a 100-bed facility opens into a caseload measured in thousands, is not reported in any source.

Known

  • This is the largest-ever Ebola outbreak in the DRC. 24
  • It is the world's second-largest epidemic after the 2014-16 West Africa outbreak. 8
  • The Bunia centre has 100 beds and around 300 health workers. 45

Unknown

  • No public breakdown of confirmed versus suspected beds has been specified in the sources.
  • No source names the virus strain or describes vaccine and treatment availability.
  • Whether the centre filled on opening day remains unreported.

Next

  • Whether the scale-up outpaces doubling in hotspots in the coming weeks.
  • Whether spread across five provinces reaches Kinshasa.

What remains is a race described by the responders themselves. A record outbreak in the DRC 24, spreading faster than the scale-up meant to stop it 7, with cases climbing sharply as of late August data referenced by UN News 2 and nearly 4,000 confirmed cases already recorded by 6 August 10. The Rwankole centre in Bunia, with its 100 beds and around 300 health workers 45, is the largest treatment centre the country has ever opened 3456. Whether it marks the moment the response began to close the gap, or simply the moment the gap became impossible to ignore, will be decided not in Bunia alone but in the five affected provinces and in the capital watching them with alarm 10.
