- Thunderstorms dropped up to nine inches, pushing Okeechobee's flood threat into the overnight hours.
- A later Flood Warning covers the county's southeastern area, after daytime flooding made highway sections impassable and threatened buildings.
- Earlier on November 1, we reported life-threatening flash flooding, impassable portions of State Road 70 and US 441, and water entering structures. The new development is an evening Flood Warning carrying the threat beyond midnight, with a higher reported rainfall range.
- What does that overnight threat mean for residents, and what can drivers assume about those roads?
- The warning covers southeastern Okeechobee County in Florida. The Weather Service identifies rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying, flood-prone places as facing flooding that's already happening or could begin shortly. Okeechobee and its airport are among the listed locations.
- The other listed places are Treasure Island, Four Seasons Estates, Taylor Creek, Whispering Pines and Basswood Estates. Those names identify communities within the threatened area. Residents there face the flood risk described in the warning, while actual impacts can vary from one location to another.
- Emergency management reported five to nine inches across the warned area by Sunday evening. The later warning allowed for up to one more inch, with flooding already happening or expected shortly. That additional inch was still a forecast possibility.
- The range describes rainfall across the warning area, so it doesn't give an exact total for every address. The estimates also rose during the day. Each warning paired its estimate of rain already fallen with a separate forecast for what might follow.
- Law enforcement reported three to six inches at 12:58 p.m., then four to seven inches at 2:10 p.m. By 6:30 p.m., emergency management reported five to nine inches. Those successive estimates track the rain over time across the warned area.
- The midday flash-flood warning ran until 2:15 p.m., with up to two more inches possible. The afternoon warning ran until 4:15 p.m. and allowed for another two to three inches. Both deadlines passed before the evening warning, whose forecast allowed for up to one additional inch.
- The evening Flood Warning was issued Sunday and scheduled to end at 12:30 a.m. Monday, November 2. Its scheduled window crossed midnight. All these local warning times use Eastern Standard Time, following the day's change back from daylight saving time.
- In the earlier broadcast, we reported three to five inches of rain and another one to two inches possible. That daytime warning was scheduled through 1:15 p.m. The original warning's timing also needs correcting: it began at 11:10 a.m., earlier than the 11:46 time presented in that account.
- The original Flash Flood Warning put rainfall at two to three inches. The later daytime estimate was higher. The relationship between that original warning and the later 11:46 a.m. timing still hasn't been explained, so the two times shouldn't be treated interchangeably.
- The afternoon warning described life-threatening flooding around creeks, streams, streets, highways and underpasses. Law enforcement's earlier reports included impassable sections of US 441 and water entering structures. Those were daytime observations. The evening warning adds an overnight threat without giving a fresh assessment of those roads or buildings.
- Law enforcement reported portions of State Road 70 in Okeechobee City impassable at 11:36 a.m. A preliminary storm report issued at 1:56 p.m. records that impact. It identifies an earlier flooding problem, while leaving the affected road sections and their reopening time unspecified.
- The evening warning extends the scheduled threat overnight, but current road and property conditions remain unclear. Its latest operational status also hasn't been confirmed. The next scheduled checkpoint is 12:30 a.m. Monday, when it could end or be extended. Drivers still need a current road assessment. The safety advice is to avoid driving through flooded roads.
