- On September 5, we reported 1,331 confirmed deaths in Nepal. The latest corroborated tally is 1,453, with 5,285 people still missing. An estimated 5,030 pregnant women were affected, while damaged roads and crowded shelters complicate care more than a month after the flood. Can emergency maternity care reach women before delivery, and do mothers and newborns have safe places to return to?
- The latest established government package is dated September 26, not today. The immediate maternal-health emergency extends beyond surviving the water: women need food, sanitation, transport, functioning clinics and somewhere safe to recover.
- Pooja Pariyal and her three-month-old daughter spent three days stranded at Trishuli hospital. Pooja, 21, had left her rented home in Trishuli bazaar at seven-thirty on August 26 for Ridhika's vaccination and a routine postnatal appointment. Her recollection places the destruction of her neighbourhood about ninety minutes later; that is approximate, not an independently measured flood-arrival time. The appointment meant they were away from home when the water arrived.
- About fifty patients, including five newborns, and medical staff were trapped. During daylight they climbed to the roof to watch for helicopters; at night they returned to the wards. Pooja slept little. She had nothing to clean Ridhika's soiled clothes, and hunger reduced her milk supply in her own experience. That is one mother's experience, not a measured rate of breastfeeding problems across the disaster.
- An army helicopter evacuated the group on the fourth day. Ridhika was then diagnosed with pneumonia. Her treatment and subsequent recovery remain unknown. Pooja lost everything in her rented home. Her individual circumstances leave her ineligible for government compensation; that does not establish a rule excluding every tenant. Returning to her parents is only a possibility, dependent on their being rehoused too.
- Pooja and Ridhika are living among about 125 people sharing twenty-five tents at Lamibagaichha holding centre in Bidur, a couple of miles south of Trishuli. Another survivor, Kalpana Nepali, is staying in a Nuwakot hall with about eighty displaced people. Men, women and children sleep together on floor mats and bedding. The shared toilet is not separated by sex, and queues make access difficult.
- Kalpana, 23, was seven months pregnant with her first baby when the flood struck Rasuwa. She was making soup when her husband, working at a hydropower tunnel, called just after eight-thirty and told her to reach higher ground. He escaped near the tunnel entrance. She walked uphill, fainted, and next remembers water on her face in a helicopter with ten other people. Afterward, she ate a whole packet of bread. Her doctor had advised eating every four hours.
- Kalpana does not know whether that doctor survived. The doctor is unnamed, and neither survival nor death has been established. That uncertainty belongs to Kalpana's experience, not Pooja's. Her baby is due in November. Her plan is to deliver at Nuwakot health centre and then return to the shared hall.
- Renuka Nepali had seconds to escape with her twelve-year-old son and eight-month-old daughter. The 27-year-old carried the baby and grabbed her son's hand while people ran from the flood. Her son was bruised during their escape. A heavily pregnant friend and neighbour could not keep up; Renuka remembers her being swallowed by the water while trying to grab something to hold on to. The friend's recovery or formal identification has not been independently established. Renuka is now in the same shelter as Pooja, wearing donated clothes with her children.
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women may face greater risks of trauma, shock and postpartum depression after experiences like these. That is a warning about risk, not a diagnosis of these survivors or a measured prevalence of depression. Hunger, disrupted infant care, shared sanitation, lost housing and uncertainty about loved ones continue after evacuation.
- The missing list fell from 6,150 on September 16 to 5,285 on September 26, but that does not establish what happened to each person removed. Lists were being revised and cleaned. The intervening snapshots counted 5,875 missing on September 21 and 5,705 on September 22. These are changing records, not a reconciled progression of rescues or confirmed deaths.
- The corresponding death snapshots were 1,403, then 1,411, then 1,451, and finally 1,453. The September 30 survivor account uses the September 22 assessment, rounding it to more than 1,400 dead and more than 5,700 missing. Its publication today does not turn that older missing-person figure into a new tally. No newer fully corroborated official package has been established for this report.
- The September 26 death count comprises 1,451 recovered bodies and two people who died in treatment. Only 112 of the 1,453 victims had been identified and handed over. The same package counted 13,795 people rescued and 1,113 people in twenty-one holding centres: 805 in Rasuwa, 187 in Nuwakot and 121 in Dhading. Those centres do not account for everyone displaced.
- Our August 31 report counted 919 deaths across Nepal and Tibet and 4,793 missing. Our September 5 report counted 1,331 confirmed deaths in Nepal and more than 5,000 missing. Those were dated stages, with different geographic coverage, not figures to use now. The disaster crossed the border, but the maternity-care and assistance figures in this account concern Nepal.
- The last established Tibet-side split was forty-three dead and 519 missing in early-to-mid September, following an earlier split of three dead and 558 missing. Those are not current September 30 counts. Adding the later Tibet split to Nepal's September 26 package would produce about 1,496 dead and 5,804 missing, but would combine different reporting dates rather than create a joint official total.
- The humanitarian assistance caseload is 84,270 people, including 32,021 children, across seventeen municipalities in six districts. That is the basis of the rounded more-than-eighty-thousand figure. Broader estimates of roughly 310,000 to 352,000 affected people use a larger population base. They do not measure the same thing, and neither figure establishes when support will no longer be needed.
- A rock-and-ice avalanche fell roughly 1,200 metres before becoming a destructive debris flow. The August 26 collapse began around eight-thirty to eight-forty local time at the Langtang Lirung massif. Calling it simply a glacier collapse leaves out that mechanism. Its magnitude-five-point-two seismic signal came from the collapse itself, not proof of a triggering tectonic earthquake.
- The debris flow struck an approximately seventy-two-kilometre corridor in Nepal, sweeping away villages, homes, roads and bridges. It travelled through Lhende Khola into the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river system and also struck Gyirong Port on the Tibet side. The destroyed connections now separate some women from the hospitals that can treat them.
- An estimated 750 emergency obstetric or newborn-care needs are projected over a three-month planning period. That is not 750 observed complication cases. The estimated 5,030 pregnancies also come from a population-based emergency calculation, not a census of identified women. An earlier projection of about 250 emergency-care needs was replaced by the later 750 estimate; the two must not be added.
- The earlier population base was about 310,076 affected people, producing estimates of 86,820 women of reproductive age and 4,430 pregnancies. An early local planning briefing covered fifteen affected units in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading and projected about 492 births and seventy-four emergency obstetric cases in the coming month. A later base of 352,000 affected people produced 98,560 women of reproductive age and 5,030 pregnancies. These are successive planning versions, not additional groups of women.
- A forecast puts 550 deliveries in the following month. In a September 30 publication, that reads as October, but the interview date and whether the estimate was recalculated specifically for October are unknown. Kalpana's November due date is a separate individual fact. Coverage of those expected births is not yet confirmed: the forecast does not establish appointments, completed antenatal checks, transport or reserved delivery places.
- The described arrangement assigns pregnant women in shelters to the nearest functioning health centre using estimated delivery dates. It also provides for airlifting complicated or high-risk pregnancies to a Kathmandu maternity hospital one week before delivery is due. Both the 550-birth forecast and that week-before-delivery arrangement rest on a single account. No matching published operational table for the forecast or system-wide airlift protocol has been established. The arrangement is not proof that every eligible woman has received, or will receive, a flight.
- A mother and newborn have been airlifted from Gatlang health post to Paropakar Maternity and Women's Hospital in Kathmandu. But weeks after the flood, isolated communities including Gatlang and Aamachhodingmo still lacked access to ultrasound or antenatal checks because roads were cut.
- Nine women had delivered at Trishuli Hospital since the disaster by September 6. Four maternity patients had been referred elsewhere, two by army helicopter and two by ambulance. A separate September 6 snapshot at Paropakar recorded seventeen referred patients from Rasuwa and Nuwakot, with thirteen pregnant or postpartum women discharged. Seventeen was the referral count, not the discharge count. The remaining patients were described as stable.
- A referral journey that previously took about two hours to Kathmandu was taking seven to eight hours via Galchhi in a September 2 snapshot. A differently specified Bidur–Galchhi–Betrawati route took about five hours in another account. These are dated, route-specific descriptions, not one confirmed travel time today. Functioning hospitals alone cannot solve delayed access.
- Two mobile units provided a partial answer through Marie Stopes International in the August 28 to September 3 response period. A Nuwakot team of one doctor and three nurses delivered antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, gynaecological care, psychosocial support, infection management and referrals for high-risk pregnancies and obstetric complications.
- Mobile-service reach exceeded nine hundred people by mid-September; nine hundred is only the lower bound. The earlier snapshot counted 146 sexual and reproductive-health and gender-based-violence contacts, sixty-nine percent female. The September 4 to 9 snapshot counted 472 people, including 356 women and girls, after expansion to Bidur and Kispang across nine mobile-team sites. These overlapping snapshots must not be added, and they are not counts of pregnant women receiving care.
- The exact mid-September cutoff is unspecified. More than half of those in the later reach figure were women, with psychosocial support reaching hundreds. A related September 4 to 9 service summary recorded 145 psychological-first-aid contacts.
- The material response included 2,800 dignity and adolescent kits, initially broken down as two thousand dignity kits and eight hundred Kishori kits, plus three hundred tarpaulins. The September 4 to 9 record specifies dispatch through government and Nepal Red Cross channels. Earlier and later descriptions use delivered or provided wording, but dispatch alone does not establish receipt by every intended recipient. Adolescent kits are part of the combined total, not an extra quantity to add.
- Four women-friendly spaces were established during September 4 to 9, offering information, psychosocial support and referrals. Pooja also received a dignity kit. That is meaningful assistance, but does not establish restored housing or comprehensive postnatal care.
- Some women have received deliveries, referrals, mobile care, emergency flights, supplies and protective spaces. That answers part of the care question. It does not establish that the 550 expected deliveries are covered, that every high-risk pregnancy has transport, or that mothers returning from hospital have safe accommodation. Ridhika's recovery remains unknown. Kalpana's stated delivery plan still leads back to a hall shared with about eighty people.
