  1. Investigators recovered an engine section from the buried jet that killed all nine aboard.
  2. Tail fragments found miles away show the aircraft was breaking apart before it struck the ground.
  3. On November 1, we reported nine people aboard, with their condition still unknown. Investigators now have to determine whether a tail-control failure started the emergency or followed it.
  4. The Learjet 60 was flying from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. It crashed near Greenacres and Cresthaven in Palm Beach County, along Military Trail, shortly before one in the afternoon.
  5. The crash happened on Sunday, November 1. Early descriptions used several nearby community names, but they describe the same emergency. The aircraft carried two crew members and seven passengers. Everyone aboard died, including two young children.
  6. Aurora Aviation operated the flight under the business name Upper Jet. The aircraft lost radio and radar contact while en route. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with the Federal Aviation Administration also involved.
  7. The recovery team had to reach wreckage deeply embedded in an impact crater. Rain and water inside the crater complicated that work. Crews drained water and cleared hazards before excavation could begin.
  8. Excavation began late November 4, three calendar days after the crash. Investigators continued the next day and recovered a portion of one engine. The wreckage will go to a secure location for examination.
  9. The engine section gives investigators another component to examine. The strongest evidence of an earlier separation came from outside the crater: most of the left elevator, a movable tail surface that helps control the aircraft’s nose-up and nose-down movement.
  10. Investigators recovered most of the left elevator in three pieces, between 1.3 and 3.8 miles from the impact site. That distance shows the pieces separated before the jet hit the ground.
  11. Investigators are examining two possible sequences. The elevator could have separated and triggered the loss of control. Or forces on an aircraft already descending uncontrollably could have torn it away. They haven't determined which happened.
  12. Former NTSB investigator Greg Feith suggested structural overstress and pilot inputs during an attempted recovery could explain the separation. That's an outside theory. The investigating agency hasn't reached a conclusion about what started the descent.
  13. The crew’s radio calls describe an emergency that developed within seconds. Earlier in the flight, a controller warned of nearby moderate precipitation while the jet was at about 41,000 feet. Later, at about 35,000 feet, the crew reported light clear ice and moderate turbulence.
  14. The crew described altitude deviations of roughly 700 feet, then reported precipitation and requested a climb to 37,000 feet. The earlier 41,000-foot reference concerns a different stage of the flight.
  15. Less than 30 seconds after the climb was approved, a transmission said the aircraft was descending. A Mayday followed. Another transmission reported an overspeed condition, meaning the jet was flying too fast, and a descent. The remaining words were unintelligible.
  16. Weather is a major focus of the investigation. The crew’s reports describe conditions they encountered, but investigators haven't determined how those conditions affected the aircraft or began the emergency.
  17. The crew described descent rates of 10,000, 20,000 and 22,000 feet a minute during the radio exchanges. Other descriptions put the descent above 30,000, or around 32,000. A tracking estimate described 27,000 feet lost in one minute.
  18. Those figures can describe different moments and different ways of measuring the fall. They can't be combined into one settled reconstruction. What they consistently describe is a very rapid descent, with the crew reporting overspeed.
  19. By November 6, investigators hadn't found the cockpit voice recorder and couldn't confirm it was aboard. The public audio captures transmissions to air traffic control. It leaves investigators without a recovered recording of cockpit conversations and warnings.
  20. The captain was Jeffrey Gregory, known as Jeff, who was 55. His co-pilot was Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, who was 20. Her mother, Camila Corteleti, said she earned her pilot’s license at 17 and had more than 1,300 flight hours.
  21. Gregory held an unrestricted Learjet 60 qualification. Filgueiras held a restricted qualification requiring her to fly with a fully qualified pilot in command, such as Gregory. Both were certified flight instructors.
  22. At a November 6 news conference, her father, Allan Filgueiras, said the radio recording showed his daughter trying to control the aircraft until the last minute. The family’s attorney, Stuart Grossman, said 20 NTSB investigators had been sent to South Florida.
  23. The passengers included entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife, their two young children, the children’s caregiver and two family friends. Accounts identify his wife as Helen Sharp and name caregiver Anita Maria Cetina and friends Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr. Some names vary across those accounts.
  24. The NTSB also identified one injured person on the ground: a man in a nearby vehicle who suffered a leg injury. That updates early statements that there were no reports of ground injuries. Officials reported no deaths on the ground.
  25. Stephanie Platts separately said she burned her foot while her family escaped flames and burning debris that reached their property. She said the crash happened yards from her home, and that her family lost the home.
  26. In the November 5 account, Platts was staying temporarily at the Greenacres Community Center. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach was helping her, and a fundraiser had been established to support the family.
  27. Later estimates put displacement at 400 to 600 people. Early accounts described about 600 evacuated from the nearby mobile-home community. Those approximate figures don't show that exactly 200 people returned. The affected community included almost 80 mobile homes.
  28. Residents had no confirmed timetable for returning home in the displacement updates. Officials were pursuing temporary shelter, food and transportation, along with longer-term housing assistance and emergency funds. Businesses were also seeking help.
  29. Military Trail initially closed in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Later descriptions extended the affected stretch toward Purdy Lane and Alameda Drive. John I. Leonard High School closed on November 2, and dozens of businesses closed inside the restricted area.
  30. The crash left a roadway crater, downed power lines and damage to nearby property and infrastructure. Damaged water lines and repairs could keep the road closed for weeks, with some estimates reaching at least 30 days. No reopening date has been announced.
  31. Aircraft debris also reached roofs of nearby homes and buildings. Ana Escobar said a metal piece pierced her roof and landed in her kitchen, less than a mile from the crash scene. Sheriff’s deputies collected it on November 3.
  32. Investigators hadn't confirmed that particular piece came from the jet. Peter DiMaira also described finding suspected tail material at a workplace about 3.8 miles away. Each fragment needs examination before investigators can place it in the aircraft’s final sequence.
  33. The NTSB asks people to leave suspected wreckage undisturbed and arrange collection by email, with a photograph if possible. The agency says people shouldn't keep, move, alter or dispose of it. Small fragments may help establish what happened.
  34. The recovered elevator establishes that a control surface separated before impact. Investigators still have to determine whether its loss began the emergency or resulted from forces during the descent. The engine section and other recovered pieces will undergo further examination.
  35. The NTSB labels the recovery information preliminary and subject to change. A preliminary report was expected in about a month. Determining the probable cause could take more than a year.
