- Conservation officials have found 43 whales along the coast and are preparing to bury their remains. They believe none survived. The Department of Conservation is working with iwi, local Māori communities, on the care of the whales.
- On November 5, we reported residents' estimate of about 50 stranded whales and the deaths of all four found alive. Friday's update gives a more specific count and moves the response toward burial. Why did these whales come ashore?
- The whales were found along the Ngāwi–Mangatoetoe coast, near Cape Palliser at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island. The search covered several kilometres of rocky shoreline exposed to Cook Strait swells.
- Some carcasses were swept out to sea. That made counting difficult while rescuers were still trying to save the living animals. The early figures also covered different parts of the emergency. A count on one beach couldn't capture everything happening along the affected coastline.
- Officials initially counted roughly 20 in the first pod. An interim tally put the dead at at least 30. Residents estimated about 50 across the area. The latest count is 43 found, but officials haven't explained precisely how the earlier figures fit together.
- The Department of Conservation identified two pods during the response. Its later count of 43 covers the coastal stretch. That number now replaces about 50 as the latest tally of animals found. The change doesn't tell us that fewer whales died, or that any missing animals survived.
- Rescuers kept the living whales wet and cool as they tried to return them to the sea. Department of Conservation staff worked alongside Project Jonah rescuers and marine medics, local iwi and Ngāwi volunteers. Four whales were still alive that afternoon.
- Two were refloated on the rising tide. By Thursday evening, all four had died, including those returned to the water. The rescue effort had failed to keep any of those four alive. Their deaths were already known when we last reported the stranding.
- Sharp rocks, loose gravel and powerful swells constrained the work on shore. Rescuers faced a remote, exposed coast. Those conditions help explain the difficulty of reaching and helping the whales. Scientists still haven't explained why the animals originally came ashore.
- Pilot whales form strong social bonds and are vulnerable to mass strandings. Whole groups can become trapped in shallow coastal water. The Department of Conservation said this area hadn't recorded a mass stranding since the 1990s. Those facts provide context, but the cause of this event remains unknown.
- The whales' remains are being treated as taonga, meaning highly prized heritage. Iwi are involved in their care and burial arrangements. The Department of Conservation says it's working with them to manage that burial; preparations are underway.
- Scientists use necropsies, examinations of dead animals, to investigate causes of death. Massey University's Wildbase Pathology undertakes that work for the Department of Conservation. No findings explaining this stranding have been announced. Officials have now identified 43 whales along the coast, with none believed to have survived, while work with iwi focuses on caring for and burying their remains.
