  1. Police have arrested seven people after Kolkata's deadly festival crush.
  2. On October 17, we reported detentions and a promised investigation. Visitors are returning as inspectors check exits and police impose rain rules. The test is whether those changes protect crowds and lead to accountability.
  3. Inspectors began at Santosh Mitra Square near Sealdah station and also visited Tala Pratyay in north Kolkata. They examined entry and exit gates, lighting and crowd plans. Their wider assignment includes structural safety at major festival pavilions across West Bengal.
  4. Fire Services chief Anuj Sharma said food stalls must stay away from gates. He also described a committee decision to end separate VIP entry, freeing that route as another way out when crowds swell.
  5. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also called for an end to special-access lines. At popular pavilions, those lanes can remain relatively clear while ordinary visitors face the main crowd. Some venues sell passes for that access.
  6. Turning a privileged lane into an exit can give people another escape route. Organisers have also been told to widen exits, improve lighting and remove bottlenecks created by temporary rope enclosures. Officials haven't shown that every venue has made those changes.
  7. Police's eleven-point advisory requires entrances to close during rain, with visitors already inside brought out safely. Officers must stay at their posts, even in a downpour. Admissions must match conditions, and venues must have adequate lighting.
  8. Police must monitor organisers' announcements and prevent abrupt route changes. Each officer and constable must coordinate with five or six committee volunteers. Ropes, guardrails and small loudspeakers must be ready. VIP vehicles must park at a designated distance.
  9. Nine experienced Indian Police Service officers have been assigned crowd-management duties. They come from traffic, intelligence and investigative posts. Kolkata has roughly 3,500 festival pavilions, making staffing decisions consequential far beyond the venue where the crush happened.
  10. Tala Pratyay announced a temporary closure, citing administrative instructions. Alipore Sarbojanin, Chetla Agrani and Ballygunge Sarbojanin also suspended or restricted entry. Santosh Mitra Square's committee asked people not to visit for the time being.
  11. Some Salt Lake committees stopped admitting visitors, and an Allen Park show on Park Street was cancelled. Other pavilions began receiving visitors again on Sunday. Those October 18 announcements can't tell visitors which venues remain closed now, or what changed before reopening.
  12. Gatherings on roads around Chorbagan are prohibited until October 20 under an order from Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand. Police dispersed onlookers at the site. Some residents requested permission for worship without celebrations; senior officials were to consider that request.
  13. The subsequent police-shared list contains 19 people who died. On October 17, we reported a minimum of 17, alongside conflicting official remarks giving 19. The later list doesn't explain that earlier difference or settle a final toll.
  14. The list describes 13 female victims, including two minors. A separate breakdown gives four children and eleven women. Those age and sex categories can overlap. The earlier provisional description of the victims should no longer be treated as complete.
  15. Among those killed were seven-year-old Ayans Kumar Srivastava and his father, Abhishek, who was 38. A seven-year-old girl had also been identified in the earlier official account.
  16. Injury figures still don't line up. Earlier figures counted 25 receiving treatment and about 35 transported to Calcutta Medical College Hospital. Other estimates reached about 40. Sunday's totals still use 25, or more than two dozen. These measurements overlap and can't be added together.
  17. Fourteen patients were transferred to Apollo Hospitals. Sunday afternoon's hospital update described twelve as stable, with five in intensive care. A stable patient can still need intensive care. There's still no update on the patient earlier described as critical.
  18. Police say video captures an announcement telling visitors to leave because the structure was about to collapse. They're trying to identify who made it and why. Investigators haven't confirmed that a collapse occurred.
  19. The crush happened during Maha Saptami on October 17 at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin pavilion, also known as Sarada Park. It's near Muktaram Babu Street and Chittaranjan Avenue in north Kolkata. Rain and dense crowds feature throughout the preliminary investigation.
  20. Police describe narrow gates and a narrow approach road, inadequate police and private security staffing, and no clear crowd plan. They say instructions were handled verbally and people tried to escape through the entrance. These are preliminary investigative findings.
  21. Adhikari now describes one opening used for both entry and exit, divided by a hand-held rope. He alleges temporary home guards dropped the rope and sought shelter when rain began. He also described dim lighting and requested the guards' names.
  22. Those guards had also worked during the 2024 and 2025 festivals. Adhikari's account changes the earlier emphasis on an exit gate, but investigators still have to reconstruct the sequence. Other preliminary accounts describe private security staff blowing whistles.
  23. Rain, the collapse warning and whistles may all have affected movement. Police haven't established their precise order. Investigators collected CCTV and witness statements, and forensic experts gathered evidence Saturday night. Further forensic visits and interviews with survivors were planned for Sunday.
  24. A local court sent seven accused to ten days of police custody on October 18. They include the committee secretary and vice-president, and two private security employees. Fourteen people had initially been detained; seven were subsequently arrested.
  25. Police opened the case themselves at Girish Park, including a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The allegations still have to be tested in court. The investigation is also to examine organisers and the authorities that approved the arrangements.
  26. Locals have also alleged that officers were concentrated near VIP access. Investigators need to examine staffing and command decisions alongside admission planning and venue approval. Responsibility extends to the decisions that shaped the arrangements people encountered.
  27. The proposed judge-led inquiry still needs the Calcutta High Court's permission. Adhikari said the Chief Secretary would write to the Chief Justice. He also said Kolkata Police officials would be excluded because their own role is under question.
  28. The preventive inspection committee is already working. The separate judicial investigation still awaits permission and an appointed judge. Earlier references to a task force and the newer special investigation team wording describe that proposal; they don't mean two judicial inquiries have been appointed.
  29. On October 17, we reported that Jayanta Banerjee resigned after the crush, taking moral responsibility. That timing is now disputed. His resignation is also dated to July, after fifteen years as general secretary, so it can't safely be counted as a consequence of the disaster.
  30. Academic Mukulika Banerjee argues that police were diverted to other duties, including Home Minister Amit Shah's visit. That's an allegation about deployment, rather than an investigative finding about the cause. Shah's planned hospital visit did take place at Apollo.
  31. Opposition parties accuse the administration of inadequate emergency arrangements and ruling-party influence over the committee. Those accusations, and the administration's focus on organisers, still need to be tested against who authorised the venue and deployed its staff.
  32. The state promised 25 lakh rupees and a government job for each deceased victim's family. The newer description specifies a Group D post. Injured people were promised five lakh rupees each, with the state covering their full treatment costs.
  33. Prime Minister Narendra Modi separately announced two lakh rupees for each deceased person's next of kin and 50,000 rupees per injured person. Those national relief payments are separate from the state's promises.
  34. Durga Puja continues, with restricted admissions where necessary and subdued Bijoya observances. A toned-down post-festival gathering with Kolkata and suburban committees is planned for October 26. At the venues, enforcement of the new rain and exit rules is still the immediate test.
  35. Adhikari said on October 18 that he planned to visit bereaved families over the next two days and hand over compensation cheques. Families are still waiting for confirmation that the promised money, treatment support and government jobs have been delivered.
