- Russian glide bombs killed 20 people in Zaporizhzhia.
- Emergency services put the toll at 20 dead and 18 injured by Saturday evening. Three children are among the dead, and three among the injured. Rescuers are still searching, so those numbers could change.
- Families still need to know who remains beneath the rubble and who has been located.
- Five Russian guided glide bombs hit residential areas before dawn on October 10. Damage spread through the Shevchenkivskyi and Voznesenivskyi districts. The attack came shortly before five in the morning, while the city was still in darkness.
- A five-story apartment block took a direct hit. One entrance section was substantially destroyed, and upper floors collapsed. Residents were buried beneath the remains of their building.
- Acting mayor Regina Kharchenko described how the building came down. She said, “The ground floor was hit, and the floors above just collapsed.” That left rescuers searching through collapsed floors for people who had been inside.
- More than 80 workers joined the search-and-rescue operation. Rescuers paused their work to listen for survivors. People were believed trapped for more than eight hours, and the search continued into the evening.
- Rescuers found Yana and her husband Anton beneath the rubble of a damaged apartment building. Both were injured and evacuated. Their young daughter was among those killed.
- Emergency services recorded three people rescued at one point in the operation. They also provided psychological assistance to 35 people. Those figures capture part of the response while workers continued searching the wreckage.
- At least 26 residential buildings suffered damage. The destruction extended beyond the apartment block where floors collapsed.
- Ivan Fedorov counted 23 apartment blocks and three private houses among the damaged buildings. Three residential buildings sustained significant damage. The total counts whole buildings, with the damage varying from one property to another.
- Blast effects and shrapnel also damaged non-residential buildings and premises, vehicles and a garage.
- Fedorov now co-chairs the regional Defense Council and heads Ukraine's State Agency for Restoration. He left the regional administration leadership in early September. Mykhailo Semikin is the acting head of the regional military administration.
- Officials first counted four deaths. Later assessments gave seven, then eight. President Volodymyr Zelensky gave 12. Subsequent counts reached 15, then 17, before emergency services put the toll at 20. Each figure described the same attack as the search continued.
- The earliest assessment included one child among the dead and two among the injured. Three children were included in the later death totals. Injury counts were less consistent. An early assessment listed 11 injured, and another listed 16 before Zelensky gave 14. Later assessments gave 16, then 18. These snapshots weren't synchronized, and adding them together would count people more than once. Zelensky also said two injured people were in critical condition.
- Zelensky said officials were checking the status of 12 people who might have been there. Kharchenko earlier estimated up to 14 might be trapped. A later Interior Ministry update described 11 people who hadn't contacted anyone since morning.
- Those checks may concern some of the same people. They can't be combined into an additional casualty total, or reduced by subtracting the rise in deaths.
- Zelensky accused Russia of treating relief from diesel sanctions as permission to keep attacking. He described the bombing as Russia expressing its thanks for that relief. His statement also carried the earlier figures of 12 dead and 14 injured.
- Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone on October 9. After that call, the US Treasury issued a temporary authorization for specified transactions involving Russian diesel. The bombing followed early the next morning.
- The Treasury license permits specified Russian-diesel transactions under two sets of sanctions rules. It covers sale, delivery and offloading, as well as importation into the United States. The authorization runs until April 7, 2027.
- The license keeps restrictions on debiting certain Russian government accounts at US financial institutions. Those include accounts belonging to Russia's Central Bank, National Wealth Fund and Ministry of Finance. Separate European Union and British measures also remain in place.
- The authorization preceded the bombing, but we don't know of evidence connecting it to Russian strike planning or orders. Zelensky's accusation expresses his political judgment about easing pressure on Russia. The timing alone doesn't show why Russia launched this attack.
- Semikin announced that Sunday, October 11, will be a day of mourning in Zaporizhzhia. By Saturday evening, rescuers were still searching, and officials hadn't explained how many people remained unaccounted for after the earlier whereabouts checks.
